RE: Week 24 - WTA Premier ($710,000) - Birmingham, UK - Grass

A shame Katy's match had to end like that. I hope it's nothing serious but I'm worried that she would have tried to carry on in such a bit match if at all possible.

From someone who was there: (Michael Beattie on Twitter)

"All over as shadows lengthen on court at #aegonclassic. @katydunne retires 2-1 down in third - heavily strapped rt hip gave in #aegonclassic"

All the very best to her. Just hope it will be OK soon, like within 2 Weeks !

Difficult to know the exact nature of the injury, but she clearly was well strapped up walking onto court, anywhere from the hip/groin/upper leg area. She started to look discomforted from the start of the 2nd/ called the trainer start of the 3rd, was then in tears after but continued on, and then retired very wisely I'd say. Hopefully just a small injury and a little rest will do the trick.

I was ambivalent about whether they give Katy a Wimbledon main draw wild card or not this year (it's not hard to see advantages and disadvantages both ways, plus, selfishly, I'd like to go and see her play qualies LOL) but now I really hope they do give her a main draw wild card if the extra week would give her more chance to recover.

I changed my mind and went to the tennis and bumped into Philwrig and Priesty and we watched Katy's match with the Dunne family and friends in front on us.

Georgi was very hit and miss in the first set. Her first serve was all over the place and Katy took advantage. Georgi was much more consistent in the second set, but Katy was clearly feeling that leg/hip and it she was obviously in distress as she was wiping the tears whilst playing at the end.

A fully fit Katy may have won that match and she should take that on board as she has the potential to make it at this level.

The future is very promising and with a little more power and some work on her serve, which was good today, there is no reason why she cannot be top 150 in the next 12 months.

I changed my mind and didn't go - I saw Dan E and James on tele instead! I did see Katy on Saturday playing the winning sets against Lim and was impressed.

Katy still has so much she can improve as well which is a good thing. I think she's still quite immature - physically, emotionally, technically (I feel sometimes like she's 16 not 19, and that's not a dig by the way, I just feel she has so much scope for learning more and still seems quite 'green', but perhaps that's because she stayed in juniors so late) and if she gets a good team around her and ups her work rate she can really start to get in he sort of shape she needs to be to compete at this level regularly and iron out some of the more obvious kinks in her game.

I'd like to see her rise steady, picking off better players consistently. For me top 300 by the end of the year would be a good achievement and nice springboard for a good 2015. A big spike that she can't maintain isn't good on the long run.

She may well end up higher, but with the way the scheduling now sits it's hard to see where she will get big scores from (I don't think she's ready to be winning 25ks yet, but if she could start reaching a few quarters etc... and build up a nice consistent best 18 score she'll be doing great).

She has a nice team. Jo Durie was there yesterday and is part of the team. Ian Bates was also watching on.

The other major positives are she is enjoying her tennis, which is obvious from her demeanour and most importantly she seems to play better in the bigger matches.

Forecast today is for some heavy showers today, but the rest of the week is beautiful weather.

Some better news from Katy

"couldnt sleep last night worrying about my leg, woke up this morning very happy because it feels a million times better!! :)"

I did initially think and say that it was very sensible for Katy to have retired, which ultimately it was.

The more I hear though, I rather wonder if it should have happened earlier ( even if it got worse than she / the trainer expected ).

I suspect she would have retired had she lost the first set

Good luck with the recovery, katy, and huge congrats for the recent results.

Re the MD, the 'to wildcard or not to wildcard' has been given a fair bit of airtime (!) but it would be rather 'amusing' if the LTA didn't recommend her and the AELTC gave her one anyway.

Jo looking bright early on, but played a very poor run of points to miss two break points in the third game
