Final:  Jos Rae & Anna Smith CR 312 (161+151) defeated (4) Sharon Fichman & Maria Sanchez (CAN/USA) CR 158 (59+99) by 7-6(5) 4-6 [10-5]

Unless I'm mistaken, this win takes Anna (514pts) and Jocelyn (504pts) to our new No.1 & No.2 GB doubles players

We'll find out for certain on Monday! wink

It should take Joss to about 140 and Anna 131 in the rankings. If they both avoid injuries and keep playing together their points should be the same by the end of July at the latest.

Excellent win for Joss & Anna - really excited by their progress in less than a year. Jo did well to overcome a fiery opponent in Fichman, I didn't catch the Pliskova match but the shoreline is competitive and all in all a good start to her grass season (just a shame about the whole points thing even if the restructure was needed).

Few notes from today:
Jo won through against a very tough annoying opponent in Fichman. I think she queried every call that was remotely close to being called out. Unfortunately though due to the effort required emotionally and physically to win through such an epic match it took its toll against Pliskova.
Really really pleased for Joss and Anna, turfed out to court 7 in the fading light they won an epic match. From 6-5 in the MTB they won 4 straight points with winners, a couple just catching the line. And guess what Ms Fichman wasn't happy, calling the umpire all sorts of names at the end. Added to that Fichman snubbed me earlier on when I commiserated with her on a well fought quality match with Jo.

I remember Fichman having a heated encounter with Anne Keothavong a few years back (I can't imagine Annie K tolerating her none sense) so I wasn't surprised by Sharon's antics. However I was a little saddened that she pulled it with Jo given that they had played doubles recently. Ah well.

I got into my head (for some reason) that the semi-finals would be played today so was a little surprised to read the above and then checked today's the order of play. I know they got behind earlier in the week due to the weather but ah well.
Philwrig - you obviously had the advantage of being there so you will have to tell me whether you feel Fichman may have been genuinely robbed of one or two points - which could have made a difference? But it does help explain why my scoreboard seemed to moving a bit slow together with some really long points!
I can understand why you might think the match against Fichman (and I wasn't aware she had a bit of a reputation) may have had an effect on her later match but I think you also have to take into consideration that:-

a) Konta was probably still the marginal favorite especially with having home advantage (not sure how many were there or if you can count that) even though Pliskova is only 16 places below Konta

b) Pliskova had also come through quite a tough match earlier having only played 3 games less but admittedly nowhere near as long and

c) the fact that both sets were seemed so close might indicate that whatever happened in earlier matches was perhaps not really a major factor as to who won this.

Like I say though - you were there - I wasn't. But from the Czech's point of view that was probably a good win given Konta's recent form.

I remember Pliskova walking by after her match was finished and Jo had barely finished the 1st set. So for me has to be a factor.

My personal opinion is that Ms Fichman is all about gamesmanship. If you query enough calls, then there's a chance that the next close one might go your way. Thankfully the umpire remained strong. All calls looked spot on. Also remember the MTO at 4-3. Ironically both are friends off the court.
