Week 23 - ITF ($75K) - Nottingham - Grass

Naomi breaks at the start of the match on her 3rd bp *1-0

Easy holds from both *2-1

Ugly game from Naomi broken to 15, just one first serve, one df 2-2*

ZD holds to love *2-3

Better serving from Naomi, seemed to spend ages talking to umpire about something, then immediately a horror drive volley error but holds to 30 3-3*

ZD holds to 15. Naomi's backhand going from sublime to ridiculous *3-4

A couple of super forehands from Naomi as she holds to 15, also two unr 4-4*

Naomi's aggressive play sets up 3 bps, she takes the third *5-4

Naomi with 3 set points, completely loses her rhythm on serve, 5 points in a row lost, 5-5*

ZD holds to 15 *5-6

Naomi's woeful play continues, 2 dfs as she is broken to 30 to lose the set 5-7

When she lands her first serve Naomi is doing fine but she's lost her last thirteen 2nd serve points (I think)

---

Naomi gets to 40-40 but more wild errors as ZD holds *0-1

Naomi wins a point behind her 2nd serve with a super forehand, 1-1*

Naomi blasts a forehand winner to set up 3 bps, a volley into the open space giving her the break *2-1

So careless from Naomi, 40-15 up in complete control of the rally, volleys straight back to ZD, missed first serves and wild errors cost her a break 2-2*

Naomi breaks immediately with more than a little assistance from Zarina *3-2

Naomi holds with a fierce forehand, another rare point won behind her 2nd serve, also her first ace 4-2*

Several super winners from NB but ZD holds to 40 *4-3

ZD slips again, another ace, finishing the game with what looked like a 2nd serve ace 5-3*

Long game with if not everything, then certainly most things, especially the whole range of Broady backhands, several stunning dtl shots, miss-hits, careless errors, and a total brain freeze from Naomi at 40-40, she wins the next three points to take the set 6-3

--

Wasn't watching Naomi holds 1-0*

ZD holds to 30 *1-1

Four 2nd serves in a row, 4 points lost 1-2*

Naomi gets 2 bps but loses the next 4 points *1-3

The complete reverse as Zarina gets 2 bps through some poor play from Naomi but NB takes the next 4 with some super shots 2-3*

ZD holds to love *2-4

Naomi dumps a forehand into the net to concede her serve 2-5*

ZD holds from 0-30 2-6

I suppose Naomi simply wasn't consistent enough. Plenty of stunning winners, her defensive play was better than usual. Needed to find a few big serves when in trouble, or when 40-0 up serving for the first set.

Naomi consolidated - if memory serves me right, Naomi needs quite substantial points to make any major movement up the rankings

Where does Joko has to get to this week to get into the top 100?

I assume they will play QF and SF tomorrow with doubles final in between - weather permitting. Given that Fichman is the only player involved in both singles and doubles.

She's defending 90 points (RG QR2 and SF points from this tournament last year) - she'd need to win the title to make the top 100 and would probably still be just outside if she made the Final.

That's old news, Steven, it's several posts up :)

I hope Boone does the all in one edit in a match that I really want to read post match as if live, say an important overnight match ( could be day too I guess ) that I don't know the result of.

No problem here, in fact good read ( well, apart from Naomi not doing better ). Just saying.. :)

Saw the last set and a half of Naomi's match. Naomi served very well to win the set and hit some rasping backhands which were very impressive.

Final set, she started strongly and then struggled to get that big first in and made lots of errors on the forehand in particular.

If Naomi can just get that consistency going(the talent is there) then she could easily be top 100 and she will be a big threat in the next few weeks on grass.

I thought Naomi gave a decent account of herself. Just a shame about the mess when ahe served for the first set
