All 3 Brits have drawn Japanese qualifiers in R1 - unfortunately, Emily was defeated 1 & 0 by her opponent in Gifu last year though.

L32: (5) Tara Moore WR 253 v (Q) Yurina Koshino (JPN) WR 568 (CH 533 in 2012)
L32: (2) Samantha Murray WR 239 v (Q) Hikari Yamamoto (JPN) WR 953 (= CH)

Good news overnight as Tara won 2 and 4.

I think Tara will need to win one more match to get her ranking up to 250.

Time for Tara to get on a bit of a run and start picking up decent points. This week, with a softish draw is ideal.

With the points for WR 250 steadfastly refusing to come down, currently 218 points, Tara could do with a good week if she is going to make the top 250 before Wimbledon.

Currently Tara is WR 253 on 215 points ( and '16th best' 5 points, so hasn't yet added this week ).

Her guaranteed pre Wimbledon points are 206 ( 215 - 14 + 5 ), 12 points off the current WR 250 mark.

A SF here would give her 18 points and a guaranteed pre Wimbledon 219 points, so that 'might' do it.

I have a feeling that Heather and Jokos success in now not needing WCs will seal them for Sam and Tara they will both at worst be ranked in the 250s. I know Lisa missed out last year at 255 but she didn't break the 250 whereas Tara and Sam have been top 250 for over a year now.

That all said I have a feeling both will make the quarters at least this week. Pity Naomi didn't stay as well given she missed the French open cut by some distance. Also amazing to think Naomi is ranked 166 yet didn't make the cut she must be the highest ranked played not in qualies.

Their current rankings are a reflection of their performances over the last year, with earlier rankings including points from over a year ago, so for me it's not really relevant that they have been top 250.

Sam will be fine anyway for making the top 250 ( 227 points guaranteed ) and hopefully Tara will make it too.

If Tara doesn't make it, I wouldn't be too shocked if she still got a MD WC, but as I've said before, I think that the LTA, having made a WR 250 target, I presume again 'without exception' except for very good young players, should stick to it. Or it just becomes far too wooly.

Does anyone know what's happened here? There's no sign that any matches have been played overnight at all - I was expecting Sam and Emily's games to have been completed by now.

Rain, I think - they're on the OoP for tomorrow, when they'll have to play two singles matches if they win R1.
