Tanasugarn historically did best on grass, didn't she? I seem to remember some very strong runs at Wimbledon ....

You are spot on - She is great on the grass and will be a true test of how far Naomi has advanced.

Considerably far it seems! Bakery products from Naomi today biggrin

All over in 49 mins too - 1st set 21m, 2nd 28m. Really didn't expect that.

Qiang Wang, age 22, WR 282 (CH 151 6/5/13) is next in the Broady firing line.

Naomi is only 3 more wins away from the top 150 target I set for her for Wimbledon and that's before any of the UK grass tournaments. If she keeps this form up she won't be far away from Hev and Jo. She is also certain now to be above Laura after Wimbledon!

I would imagine Naomi will also rise quite a few places after Roland Garros.

A lot of the women close to her will be defending 40 points for a first round Q win.

As it's now only worth 20, she'll 'gain' 20 points, almost automatically, over a lot of them.

(Naomi will have the same issue come Wimbledon, although at least a guaranteed 10 points for the main draw, unlike Jade and co).

But post, the French, I'd expect her to be higher whatever. Anyway, great win :)

Wow, go Naomi Broady.

And congrats to Jaggy for the great confidence he has shown about Naomi even before last week.

As I indicated in a table at the end of the Fukuoka thread, though, she will at least be closing in on poor Laura immediately post Wimbledon, but is not yet guaranteed to be ahead of Laura at that stage.

Laura will have 383 points ( 729 - 5 - 1 - 60 - 280 )

Assuming Naomi gets a Wimbledon MD WC, her points just need adjusted for last year's and this year's Wimbledon :

Naomi's has 350 'guaranteed' points ( 380 - 40 + 10 )

Since a R1 win here is worth 8 points, which is her current '16th best', she has not yet increased her total.

Naomi is guaranteed to overtake Laura on 4th August when Laura loses a 60 points counter ( and Naomi 14 ).

Of course, in practice, I would hope and expect that to happen sooner.

Great stuff from Naomi - Tanasugarn reached the QFs last week and took Pliskova to 3 sets so there was no indication that Naomi would put her away with a score like that!

R1 round-up:

L32: (4) Samantha Murray WR 239 beat (WC) Yumi Nakano (JPN) WR 728 (CH 555 in 2010) by 2 & 2
L32: (8) Tara Moore WR 255 beat Justyna Jegiolka (POL) WR 333 (CH 311 in 2011) by 6-3 4-6 7-5
L32: (2) Naomi Broady WR 166 beat (Q) Tamarine Tanasugarn (THA) WR 389 (CH 19 in 2002) by 0 & 1

L16: (4) Samantha Murray WR 239 v Mari Tanaka (JPN) WR 300 (CH 287 last Aug)
L16: (8) Tara Moore WR 255 v Jarmila Gajdosova (AUS) WR 254 (CH 25 in 2011)
L16: (2) Naomi Broady WR 166 v Wang Qiang (CHN) WR 282 (CH 151 last May)

Tara 2-1* (no breaks so far)

JG now 4 aces as she holds to 30 *2-2

Tara bp down. Broken to 40 2-3*

Tara with 2 bps after JG's 1st df. Both saved. JG holds *2-4

Tara holds 3-4*

JG holds to 15. JG now with 7 aces. *3-5

Tara holds to 15. 4-5*

Jarmila dominant on her first serve, winning 93%. She holds to 15. 4-6

Tara holds to 30 at the start of the 2nd set 1-0*

JG holds *1-1

Tara saves 2 bps 2-1*

JG up to 95% on first including 8 aces *2-2

Tara facing 3 bps. Saves two. 2-3*

JG holds to 30 despite df trouble. *2-4

Tara holds to 15 3-4*

JG holds once more *3-5

Tara facing mp. She's broken 3-6

Tara had bps in just the one game. Jarmila's first serve totally dominant. 4-6 3-6

----

Sam *1-2 (2 breaks)

Sam up to 3 df already. She saves a bp but loses the next two points 1-3*

Sam with a bp. She breaks *2-3

Sam facing 2 bps. Saves both. More bps saved but eventually she's broken. Sam with 3 aces 4 dfs 2-4*

MT holds *2-5

Sam broken from 40-15. Yet to hold. 2-6

MT holds after a long game *0-1

Sam broken again. More dfs. 0-2*

MT another lengthy game but no bp chances *0-3

I wasn't paying attention but Sam broken again 0-4*

Sam breaks *1-4

Sam up 30-0 loses the next 4 points including another df 1-5*

MT holds 1-6

Sam seemed competitive in her return games but was unable to hold serve at all. 2-6 1-6

A closer look at Sam's stats for her first round win, indicated that she is struggling on her own serve. She had 3 aces and 8 dfs in that match. Broken 3 times in a 6-2 6-2 win. So perhaps not much of a surprise that a better quality opponent beat her convincingly.
