Week 19 - ITF ($10K) - Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt - Hard

The main draw is out but the new WTA rankings still aren't - possibly waiting for the Indian Harbour Beach doubles final that was held over until today. Anyway, Brits make up a quarter of the main draw!

L32: (7) Danielle Konotoptseva WR 775 v Lara Rafful (ITA) WR 1036 (CH 651 in 2011)
L32: (WC) Savannah Sills UNR v Chantelle Rigozzi (AUS) WR 1131 (CH 1099 last Nov)
L32: (WC) Aimee Gibson UNR v (5) Ekaterina Klyueva (UKR) WR 738 (= CH)
L32: Francesca Stephenson WR 1089 v (WC) Antonia Smallbone UNR
L32: (6) Katie Boulter WR 772 v (Q) Camila Aguirri (ARG) UNR (17yo)
L32: (2) Lucy Brown WR 643 v (Q) Tamara Bojanic (MNE) UNR (15yo)

I don't think there will be rankings this week because of the Madrid tournament.

No, I am sure there will be rankings and they are just later ( Madrid is just a one week tournament ). Maybe having a Monday holiday.

How did 3 Brits get wild cards?!!

There was only 6 players in qualifying so they probably were next in acceptance. I'll go for 5 to make it through from a possible 7.

Yes, it made me smile smile Especially as there were higher ranked players who had to play the qualifiers.

I put it down to the fact that the UK is paying so much in entry fees at the moment in the women's tour in Egypt (and doing a lot of water sports and other tourist fun things:)) that we are probably single-handedly supporting the local economy and so deserve a few wildcards!

Aimee took the first set 6-2 from the 5th seed and had several break points in the first game of the second smile

Would be good if she could come through.

Only recently back on tour, Aimee picks up a career best ranking scalp! Very well done to her

L32: (WC) Aimee Gibson UNR beat (5) Ekaterina Klyueva (KAZ) WR 738* (= CH) by 2 & 4

* exact ranking for career best scalp purposes to be confirmed when the WTA get their act together

Wow - first point and takes out the five seed....Wildcard justified

Must have a half decent chance in the next round as well.

Are you sure?  I thought there weren't rankings during Premier Manadatories as they usually start before the Monday.

As you might be aware (but some probably won't), while it's her first point in the last 12 months, it's not her first-ever point - she has actually been ranked before (CH 1142 in 2012)

Yes, Jon, pretty sure.

As far as I am aware the only times where there is a rankings gap week in updates are for the Slams plus Indian Wells and Miami ( where the main draw gets going at the end of the previous week ).

The ATP rankings have been updated and I have been absolutely confident that the WTA rankings would be too. Though, err, taking their time !

Technical problems on the WTA site apparently. Though they've put up a weekly report which includes the first two pages of the pdf so why they can't just upload the whole pdf, I'm not sure - these days, they usually publish the pdf version a couple of hours before the main rankings pages get updated anyway. From the top 100 list in the report, I know that Laura has dropped one place to 63, but that's it for now.

Savannah Sills is a set and at least one break down in the second.

From a set and a double break (1-6 2-5* down), Savannah won 4 games in a row to lead 6-5* and they are now in a tiebreak ... (5-4*)
