It is v. difficult to find out where he is playing. Newcastle would be a strange choice to my mind, but he is not in the main draw for Rome or Aix. He is currently playing at Challenger level, he should leave Futures tennis behind. Both Rome and Aix are very easy to get to and he would be mixing with the right players and playing at the correct level. I'm sure Greg would agree with this. I'd rather see Kyle have a training week than play futures.

Steve
and if he were to win Newcastle, which he probably ought to at this point, he would rule himself out of qualifying for the following week's CH qualifying.......so it becomes self-fulfilling that he either takes another week off, or seeks another Futures.

At least he's playing a tournament!!!
I was going to make the same point but you beat me to it. According to the entries and rankings page, he is planning to qualify for the Heilbronn challenger. That can't happen now unless he loses early in Newcastle. At least if he is in Newcastle, somebody can ask what his plans are. I wonder if Greg will be with him?
I'm guessing Kyle would rather play a strong futures event near home rather than have to play qualies( alot of matches but limited points ) of a challenger which is a packed field, logic thinking.
Plus one of the most prestigious events on the calendar ;)
"Near home" is not quite as straight forward a question as it was a few decades ago. I think I'm right in saying that he trains in Roehampton. If he is travelling to Newcastle so that he could call in on his folks and friends in Yorkshire I would be prefectly cool with that. But Roehampton to Newcastle is one heck of a trip however you do it. Door to door I think going to Rome could easily be be quicker and probably a lot less stressful. I agree that playing challenger qualies doesn't bring many points and potentially having two matches a day is not ideal. But in qualies he would be seeded and wouldn't have to play anybody particularly strong to make it thru to the main draw. I feel sure that three consecutive European challengers followed by a fortnights training/rest should be the way to go. He is on a hiding to nothing if he plays futures - an early loss could affect his confidence and winning the tournament will only move him up the rankings by 15 or 20 places.
He has to win 5 matches to get 18 points as a Qualifier in a Challenger, where he'd almost certainly have to play higher ranked players in the last two of those five matches.
In this tournament he should have a stress free run to the semi's at the very least. An easier 18 points.
I would have thought that Kyle would be rather more interested in his tennis development than stress free runs and possibly easier points in futures ( and I would assume that he will get a Wimbledon MD WC whatever ).
Combined with a run to the final here apparently absolutely compromisng him re challenger qualifying the following week, this would seem a very strange one.
As I have mentioned before, Kyle does seem to have a good head on him to cope with it all, but if he has a WC here ( do we know yet ? ) for me it is a case of his schedule this year continuing to be pretty "messy".
