Brilliant news ! There's a bit of the Dan Smethurst going on with Naomi ::))
I don't think the aces and DFs stats are very important, not unless you also have the stats for service winners.
It's a fast surface, both girls have a big serve - they may both have been hitting a large number of service winners, which wouldn't show on their aces stat but would justify the DF one.
This is artificial grass, isn't it? The synthetic stuff with sand in between? Do many UK clubs have it? Haven't seen much, which surprised me; it's a great concept.
(Should mention that Naomi and Eleni lost their doubles final 6-3 6-4 to the top seeds - but that won't take the gloss off another wonderful day for Naomi)
My club used to play with synthetic grass (I always called it astro, probably incorrectly) as did a couple in the area. Its a really fun surface to learn to play on because its quick, keeps rallies shorts and makes you feel more powerful than you actually are.
Anyways, more importantly, what a stunning week for Naomi. Other than that first set collapse, she was fairly dominant in that match, and to beat a player of Pliskova's quality despite throwing an early lead shows that Naomis mental game has risen along with her physical one.
Does anyone have any ideas how her game has changed? I definitely agree with earlier comments about the big weapons and clear technical problems - her backhand and serve were both fantastic when firing but could break down quickly. I wonder whether its a matter of consistency improving rather than any major changes to stroke production
As Steven points out , Naomi smashes through the 200 mark for points this season ( 203 in all ).
The great thing is and what has really boosted her ranking is that this comes on top of a very good end to last year ( 132 points in just over 2 months from late October to late December ).
It had been mentioned a number of times what a great opportunity Naomi would have in the first half of this year to really boost her ranking, and it is tremendous that she has taken this opportunity and then some.
And without getting greedy it need far from end here, since her best 16 from just late October total 334 points. Essentially her points gathered in less than 7 months just in themselves would have her currently within the top 190 ( she only has 54 points to defend before late October from 2 counters, including 40 points from Wimbledon qualifying.
Is it going OTT to wonder if the new British no 1 post Wimbledon might be more than a two way battle ?!
Yes, my own feeling is that Heather will move into a clear GB no 1 position. Just musing that if Heather doesn't pick up the sort of points that I anticipate she will, and with Naomi still having such a potential upside to her ranking, that Naomi could put herself into the mix.
Terrific stuff from Naomi, on fire, confidence must be sky high, looking forward to seeing how she gets on at Notts and then the other grass court tournaments. If she can stay in this form watchout in June !
Artificial grass is the surface of choice up here in the NE for most clubs, nice surface to play on and needs very little maintenance and durable, but quite expensive to lay down for the first time.
For my amusement, I have looked at the points players are now 'guaranteed' to have in their immediate post Wimbledon ranking points ( I have given Heather, Jo and Naomi 10 R1 Wimbledon points and no R1 Roland Garros points, direct entry to RG MD would change stats just very slightly ).
Current post Wimbledon points :
1. Heather 523
2. JoKo 474
3. Laura 383
4. Naomi 350
Naomi will certainly overtake poor Laura in August, if not before ( indeed quite likely before ). And Jo has a lot of points to defend later, particularly from the US Open, before Naomi has any big points to defend.
