Maybe not great, but I don't think really that horrible overall.
OK, Sam and Tara might have preferred the potential seed in R2, but I would have thought they had ambitions beyond R2. And being in low seeds' sections would on the face of it ( I haven't looked into the relevant players' form ) give them more chance of reaching at least the QFs and the points that come with that.
Sam takes the first bp of the contest to lead *5-4. She saves a bp before holding to take the opening set 6-4
Sam sees 2bps saved at 1-1* in the 2nd set. Sam up to 4 aces with 2 dfs. 2-2* df trouble for Irena gifts Sam a bp which she takes for *3-2 Sam saves 4 bps during a ridiculously long game before eventually being broken for 3-3* Irena holds from 0-30 for *3-4 At which point I'm giving up.

Naomi with an early break for *3-1 which soon becomes 4-1*. Naomi gets the double break and takes the first set 6-2, conceding just 4 points on her serve
Naomi saves a bp at the start of the 2nd set before holding 1-0*
Jade saves 2 bps, eventually holding after a lengthy game 1-1* Big serving from Naomi now 7 aces 1 df she holds to love 2-1*
Naomi breaks to love *3-1 then holds to love 4-1*
Jade struggling, she's lost the last 16 points broken to love again. Naomi ahead *5-1
After a run of 19 points against her Jade finally wins one but can't stop Naomi taking the contest 6-2 6-1 with 9 aces 1 df compared to Jade's 0 aces 6 dfs

Hmm, Sam and Jade in singles both replace their Johannesberg 24 ranking points from last year with 1 point. In doubles I notice on CR they are now behind Anna and Joss so now GB's second highest all Brit partnership and today won't help that.
