Week 17 - Challenger ($50,000) - Savannah, GA, USA (Clay)

I don't think it's that bad scheduling, has to be done sometimes.

Dave lost 6-2 6-2.

Re scheduling, I just meant Dave being 3rd on for his singles then 5th on for his doubles.

It was even tougher for Dave's & Sean's FQR doubles opponents ( wink ): that's only just been decided & it ain't the q1s, so in theory at any rate, they're in with a chance of qualifying for the MD!

FQR:  (qWC) Bjorn Fratangelo & Mitch Krueger (USA/USA) CR 2285 (791+1494) vs (q2) Dave Rice & Sean Thornley CR 433 (217+216)

Never in doubt (the lads went a break down in each set before recovering it & breaking decisively themselves...):

FQR:  (q2) Dave Rice & Sean Thornley CR 433 (217+216) defeated (qWC) Bjorn Fratangelo & Mitch Krueger (USA/USA) CR 2285 (791+1494) by 4 & 4

*****

And at least they're not stuck with the top seeds in the first round of the main draw & have a ghost of a chance of making the QFs...:

R1:  (Q) Dave Rice & Sean Thornley CR 433 (217+216) vs Jarmere Jenkins & Donald Young (USA/USA) CR 678 (251+427)

How did he lose that set. So many inexplicable errors at key moments towards the end of the set.

Didn't see the end of the set (apart from the TB) but the bit I would highlight is where James won his first service game and then was 40-0 up on Aubone's serve i.e. Aubone, the obvious underdog, is about to be broken, looking like he's hardly going to win a point, worried that as a qualifier he's going to end u0 looking ridiculous - and then James makes some stupid errors/steps back and just bunts the ball back - and Aubone gets a breath of a chance - and, hey ho, now it's all even at 6-6  . . .

... But he's started this set much better and gets the first break after many deuces. Now 67 31.

Thank goodness for that - James gets the second set. Now it's time for the real show to start . . .

Even Stevens:  James takes the second by 6-2.  Into a decider...

Definitely wouldn't say that 'was never in doubt' (!) but James wins the third set 6-4 . . . :)
