RE: Week 17 - Greece F7 ($10,000) - Heraklion (Hard)

Gee, if Alex's challenger form improves as much as his futures form.... :)

That now takes Alex to at least 113 ranking points on Monday week.

The GB top 10 had been looking very clear until Alex's recent exploits. Now a win in the final will take him to 121 points, ahead of GB No 10, Marcus ( 120 points ) and I think also ahead on tiebreak rules of GB No 9, Ed ( 121 points ).

Sorry about *another* error in the title - late night copy/paste/forget to amend problem, if I remember right.

SF: (3) Alex Ward WR 417 beat (1) Michal Konecny (CZE) WR 355 (CH 286 in 2012) by 6-4 3-0 ret.
SF: Cameron Norrie WR 797 lost to (2) Ricardo Rodríguez (VEN) WR 341 (CH 328 last Jul) by 2 & 2

FINAL: (3) Alex Ward WR 417 v (2) Ricardo Rodríguez (VEN) WR 341 (CH 328 last Jul)

H2H 1-0 - Alex beat the Venezuelan in 3 sets in last week's SFs (he's meeting opponents a round later this week!)

Well, Alex took 3 sets to beat Rodríguez last week - this week he drops just 3 games against him.

FINAL: (3) Alex Ward WR 417 beat (2) Ricardo Rodríguez (VEN) WR 341 (CH 328 last Jul) by 0 & 3

It's Alex's 4th Futures singles title and 1st since 2012. The win should lift him to around 360 and, as Indiana worked out above, to GB no. 9. He is now 14-3 this year.

Alex seems to be in fine form at the moment. Excellent win.

A week off and then back to his favoured surface of clay.

Top 300 will not take long at this rate.

Really happy for Alex. I really enjoyed following his progress in challengers and ATP qualies last year and so was gutted when he picked up the injury, but he's really come back raring to go!

Onwards and upwards, looking forward to seeing how the rest of his year goes.

Realistically, does Alex have any chance of making top 250 by Wimbledon?

Not really - on 121pts. (I think)

18pts to defend.

250 ranking has 194pts

300 ranking has 149pts

Top 300 in a possibility.

Alex's win means this week equals the best week for Brits winning singles titles in ATP and WTA-ranked events since at least the start of 2008*

* in week 43 in 2008, Andy won St Petersburg ATP, Mel South won Port Pirie 25K, James Ward won Rodez 10K+H & Dan Evans won Glasgow 10K

Playing well, no points coming off until June (18 then) and with only 13 counters so plenty of room for new additions, the nest month is looking really rosy for Alex and a perfect chance to make a significant move up.
Great stuff.
