Unfortunately, Kanepi breaks straight back. On serve 2-1*.

And another break for Kanepi means she is 2-3* up.

Kanepi serving for the match but JoKo has break point ... saved MP ...

L32: (LL) Johanna Konta WR 118 lost to Kaia Kanepi (EST) WR 23 (CH 15 in 2012) by 7-6(4) 6-4

That scoreline looks like a really good effort though, especially when playing so soon after her FQR match against a top 25 player! All-in-all, a pretty encouraging start on the clay from JoKo.

JoKo's had a good year all in all. I feel pretty encouraged by her progress.

Off the top of my head I can't think of anything significant Jo has done in 2014

Yes, I am afraid that I rather agree with you Mervatron that Jo has had a relatively slow start to the year. As you say, nothing particularly significant so far.

In points terms there has been more chance to really push her ranking up than there would seem to be later in the year.

Not really bad, just certainly not special and not really pushed on so far. This weekend though certainly looks encouraging and hopefully she can push on again.

It turns out that the points from the two wins in qualifying here were just enough for JoKo to take out her August 2013 career high by one place - she rises 7 places to 111 today
