I went to look at this and discovered that there is a ranking for those who are just starting (which presumably gets folded into the general rankings as the year goes on). Mr Norrie had made it (3) as had Mr Cash (10). It only goes to ten. Noah Rubin was 1 and Mr Norrie's colleague Gullermo Nunez was 2.
Interesting. Is it based on what they've done before college?
Speaking of Mr Norrie and Mr Cash. Cam (TCU) has made the singles final of the Texas regional and Julian (MSU) has made the doubles final of the Southern regional.
And Alex Gasson (Denver) won the Mountain regional doubles with his partner.
Not sure what the significance of the regional tournaments are in the grand scheme of things but as Helen below mentioned, nice to see some Brits doing well.
Like you DWH, don't know quite what it all means in the scheme of things but I see that if Cameron wins the regionals today (against the Dane, Soren Hess-Olesen) he'll qualify for the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships in New York, which makes sense (i.e. regionals lead to nationals).
The freshman 'rankings' are based on what players have done before college are just to highlight which programmes got the star recruits.
and yes, winning regionals leads to nationals. Lots of kudos for the college and a chance to play against the other top players and improve your own ranking.
According to Zootennis's roundup, Mr Norrie and Mr Watson won their regionals in singles; Mr Norrie and Mr Cash (separately) won theirs in doubles; and Ms Beazant lost in the finals (singles). I didn't see any other British players, though I'm not fully au fait, so could have missed some.

Thanks for the info and that does make sense regionals >>nationals.
Good luck to the guys in New York. Must be good (especially for Cam, Julian and Andrew as freshman) to experience what I assume is high level college competition so early.
Cameron Norrie unfortunately got knocked out in the first round of the Intercollegiate Championships. Andrew Watson lost too. Both in tight three setters.
Never heard of the person who knocked out Mr Norrie, but Dane Webb is a good player - tough draw for the first round. Wonderful win for Ms Beazant - well done she!
Edit: Just to note that the person who knocked out Mr Norrie has made it through to the SFs, with several good wins.

Does anyone have any info on Faris and his college comitments at Illinois he seems to have loaded up with ITF entries in January. Is that generally the pattern for seniors doing well looking for consistent high level competition or does indicate moving on full time to the futures tour?
Just a bit more US college info, with the UK ranking highly, joint 6th in terms of nations represented at Super Conference level (although the gap between the UK and the other nations at college level and the rankings at ATP level is very marked):
