Jonny O'Mara

Just trying to find out more about young Mr O'Mara having been pretty impressed with the little I have seen of him this week. I've found much less than I expected to so far. I assume he has been injured - ?

Also wondering why he is not down as an entry for Ilkley qualifying. Edit - I'm asking that based on the week 24 list on this site but now see he was not listed for this week either - might he play? Still not sure whether I'm going to make it to watch my first challenger tournament there.

He is not on the entry list, but can sign in for qualifying - entries are rarely full, so should get in.

As he is playing Surbiton successfully, I'd expect him to have a go at Ilkley.

My question is why doesn't he have a Scottish accent?

In fact, his accent is more American, than English, even.

I though he was Scottish. Has he lived elsewhere? Or just watched a lot of American TV?

He is posh Scottish lol He was born in England but was schooled in Scotland lives near Arbroath

Very highly thought of from a young age in Scotland

Loads of Scottish kids talk with US accents watching too much tv or maybe trying to be cool

I have always thought there was a distinctly Scottish twang in his voice but lets not forget that there is no more a Scottish accent than there is an English accent.

Hi guys, loving reading the posts and getting your views but an american accent ?. Now that's thrown me! Dad a Mancunian, mum from Edinburgh, lived in NE Scotland all his life, bar 6 months..nope not sure about that at all. He doesn't have the strong west coast Scottish accent that perhaps you're thinking of and East coast accent is prob considered softer and perhaps posher, that's all I can think of. Only watches TV when travelling as you don't get to snooze in front of a TV much if you fancy being a tennis player. Re financial woes comment...pretty certain I can speak for all " normal" families with a decent young player, its tough for us all to cover the expenses of travel etc. I've seen it often quoted that a proper full go on tour Costs around 40 k a year and it sure feels like it! Re not much info ... Surprised at that there's plenty on the net...played for GB, Winter cup winners, judy Murray connection, won a number titles round the world as a junior ( Denmark, Malaysia etc) last 16 junior wimbly etc, though I agree not as much as you may have thought as we have preferred to just let his tennis do the talking and see where we go rather than over hype things.any more info happy to answer, no worries. Maybe I imagined the American accent, D - or maybe he was just putting it on, to be 'cool'

But I overheard a woman also asking whether he was American, or saying something about him sounding more American than Scottish, so I wasn't alone ! It did sound like it.....

But, frankly, he can talk how he wants - good luck to him tomorrow !!!!

I think many people in England associate the Glaswegian accent as being "The Scottish accent" but as my previous post alluded to things aren't that simple. I also think the idea of Jonny affecting an American accent to appear "cool" to be extremely unlikely. While he might have a few flaws he has always struck me as a genuine young man who doesn't feel the need to fake things to impress other people.

Honestly, the thought that some people think he sounds American will mortify him. And as for the idea, perhaps its to sound cool!- never in a million years!

It was rumored he was born and bred in Nasville, I think that was BiS/BiB. Which if he sing he might get away with.

Indeed - the player who tweeted a pic of himself dressed as batman a couple of years ago is the last person I'd accuse of trying to make himself look artificially 'cool' - he seems far too busy trying to be good at tennis and enjoying life off court on his own terms to bother with all that nonsense

That, in my view, is actually very cool, in the real sense rather than the artificial sense.

I think most tennis people would think of Andy Murray as being the 'definitive' Scottish accent, not Glasgow.

And obviously there are many very different versions (as per England and America, and France indeed).

And I didn't mean putting it on to be cool, in a fake, critical way - maybe just to be funny? For humorous effect? Or, as said, maybe we were both mistaken, lost in translation and all that ....

Always sounded Scottish to me, but it's been a couple of years, disappointing to hear he's not entered for Ilkley, but having looked at the weather forecast, that may be a shrewd choice.
