Wettengel ('bet angel' in German, oddly!) won the last 4 games of the 1st set to take it 6-2 but Dan has already broken in the 2nd set and has 2 bps to go a double break up ... both saved though. Then a 3rd bp, also saved, and a 4th but that is saved too, and the American goes on to hold.
2-6 *2-1

I was really curious so did some exploring. According to the internet - and we all know that anything on the internet is true (but this actually might be) - "Wettengel German: occupational name for a road maker or mender, from Middle High German wec way, street + tengelen to break (stones), beat, or knock.
Hope that the current Wettengel doesn't "break" too many British players, causing them to be "on their way" too early!
Dan did go up a double break and served at *4-1 but "road maker" broke back once and had 2 BPs at 15-40 to break again. But this time, Dan holds on for 5-3*.
Ah, so the split is really after the first "t" - makes sense, given that way ("weg") isn't very different in German now - I've never come across the verb tengelen in German (maybe it doesn't exist any more, isn't in frequent use or I've just forgotten it!), though it does exist in Dutch with a much less violent meaning! The 'Bet angel' (which is what you get if you split it after the second "t") just seemed strangely appropriate though
Having said that, the way he's breaking the Brits this week ...
Anyway, Dan serving for the 2nd set 2-6 *5-4

Hmm. Digging further and looking for a specifically English context (with some reliability of source - this is from a well-respected Anglo-Saxon dictionary - though my applications are distinctly linguistically dubious) it appears that thengel is a king, lord or prince ... so we could call him "King of the road" GB fans can only hope that means that he's hitting the road ... and not that he's the "King of the Road Trip" that the GB players are making!

Yes, it looks as if they are going to miss the clay challengers in the US which is a shame in a way whilst they're in such good form. However it does look like it may be down to the surface change as they are back on the hard courts of Korea in a few weeks time.
With 162 points, Dan has now moved above the current 100th place in the ATP race ( 160 points ). Of course, there is zero chance of 162 points being good enough on Monday week when these points get added. But if he could win the title this week and move to 181 points he might have a squeak. He has pulled out of the Sarasota Challenger next week so won't be adding any points from that.
