RE: Week 15 - ITF ($10K) - Gloucester, UK - Hard

Pera wins. So gutted for Rona, as she was the only one capable of beating her. Bearing in mind i heard the live scores for Rona vs Pera were not shown which is annoying.

Rona started off with the look of sheer confidence and just took everything on and you could tell by her movement and attitude that she believed she could win.

1st game was quite funny, rona serving she hit two double faults then 4 aces.

1-0

second game rona hit 4 backhand return winners against pears massive serve.

2-0

really showcasing her talent and how good she can be rona went 4-1 up and pear looked lost as a puppy but rona started to get nervous i think probably wondering if she could keep that play up.

4-4 then rona breaks 5-4 has 4 set points but doesn't get that game then loses first set 7-5.

then again she goes 4-1 up looking gritty and really digging deep and showing pear who's boss but struggles mentally after hitting a few unforced errors. then its more up and down with both of them either blasting a winner or hitting a forced error. 4-4 again rona struggles with unforced errors and although playing some unbelievable tennis and obviously showing that she was 5 times better than pera she let herself down . Pera didn't win, Rona lost so she must be gutted but i reckon that will push her to win these matches.

the score was 7-5 6-4 not as they put down and i heard there was a bit of an argument with rona and the refs about that .

Pera cruising past the number one seed and rona beating her only to get beaten by herself- once she overcomes that - thats why i say she's bona make it. She's  dangerous player. Big serve, and that lefty serve out wide is a killer. Incredible physicality and movement and speed + endurance .  big forehand, and probably what is the best backhand in women's tennis i have ever seen. she eases toward the net as her volleys are great and she has ogood hands, wicked slice and drop shots and her ability to defend unbelievably as well as attack is remarkable and also how she can change from the defense position to attack by one slice mentally she just needs to believe more and more.

sorry for this but i am now a huge fan of hers after watching her play and i will keep checking her progress and hope she just keeps her head screwed on and keeps working 100% - good luck rona if you read this! You can do it!

Great to hear such unbridled enthusiasm, Sammy !!!!

As i said, I saw Rona last year and liked her too - completely agree about the absolute physicality and athleticism, and her commitment to each and every ball.

it was also quite funny because there was a guy watching her, who I took to be her Dad (although he didn't look much like, but looked about the right sort of age). Being a friendly soul (!), I decided he needed someone to chat to (not sure he saw it that way so apologies to him if he didn't) and it turns out he's not her Dad but a friend of a friend who's been 'sent' by her family to cheer and encourage - the official cheerleader so to speak. Only this guy, by his own admission, knows nothing about tennis and is really pretty lost. But, as luck would have it, Rona was playing a pretty opponent (won't say who) and 'friend' seemed happy enough watching that . . . :)

Anyway, keep us posted on the serious stuff Sammy . . .

Does anyone know more about her.  How old is she and what her history is?

That was lazy of me; I have now looked her up and seen she is 20.  Does anyone know what she has been doing until now and why we haven't heard about her before.

Although she didn't really play internationally, she was a really strong junior up to the ages of about 14/15.  Heard she'd given up due to injury but I don't know whether there was any truth in that rumour.  She certainly didn't compete anywhere from that age until about a year ago, but by the above accounts is clearly injury free at the moment!!
