RE: Week 15 - ITF ($10K) - Gloucester, UK - Hard

I agree about Beth. Nothing special, but the LTA push her because she played the national age group comps and won them.

Mariam i've seen play and she is quite useful and could get a couple of points.

Lauren is 3-1 up second set - has a very nice single handed backhand and i would like to see her progress, but i'm not sure if she has ambitions to play the tour full time.

Farah is doing better than i thought, but she has an easy bracket. Looks like she will come through and play another 1st round match.

I think everyone will want to draw Georgina Axon in the first round or Nicola George if they want to pick up a point or two. No disrepect to the two of them, but Gerogina is still only 14 and Nicola has never found the form prior to the long term injury.

First set of matches almost completed - suprised they have umpires and live scores for qualifiers though.

Beth won 7-6 7-6
Mariam won 6-2 6-4
Farah won 6-1 7-6

I don't know Olivia but I've seen Beth Askew play a couple of times - she's an athletic, correct player but there's not much more than that, imho.

I quite like Mollie Crouch too - I don't mean that she's going anywhere major with her tennis, and Laruen should win, but it's a different style and quite fun to watch.

Different style how? I've never seen Mollie play so I'm just curious smile

Mollie has just saved at least 5 match points in the 2nd set tiebreak (i.e. it was 6-1 when I first noticed the score, now 6-6!)

... but Lauren gets another match point and wins 7-6(5) 7-6(6)
Freya takes the 1st set 6-1, dropping just 8 points (4 of them in 1 game, obviously)
Fran breaks and serves out the 1st set against Alannah 6-3
Harriet is 2 breaks up against Kyria *3-0

Fran makes solid first steps in her comeback, against Alannah; winning 6-3 6-4
No doubt, it's a relief to be playing at all, and nice to get a 'W' right away.

Freya merciless, beat Katarzyna: 6-1 6-0

Harriet almost matched her, in beating Kyria: 6-0 6-2

Rona going quite well against the ranked & seeded German, just broke Niedmers as she served for the set: *5-5

Well done Rona, first set in the bag 7-6(5)
Can she repeat the trick for a good win?

Just my impression so take with a pinch of salt but . . .:

Mollie is technically all a bit dodgy (grip, takeback, construction of shot) but that makes it a bit unpredictable which is curious in itself. And she has a way of often launching her whole bodyweight into the ball, literally throwing herself at the ball, which is fun and quite infectious when you watch. And she's a tall, powerful girl so it makes an impact. And it reflects the thing I noticed, which was that she seems to really enjoy her tennis, which also makes it nice to watch. There's a bit of the EWS going on, an enthusiasm that is enjoyable, if not a technically clean game.

Also, the last time I saw her she had a great 'look' - a bit 'street', rather in the Bethanie Mattek-Sands vein. Which also makes a quite a refreshing change. I wish her well. smile

Rona breaks (she has taken 5/6 bps and saved 9/13) and will serve for the match ...

Serving for the match, Rona goes 0-30 down then wins 3 points in a row to get a match point, which the German saves.

1 match point gone by, 2 break points saved
2nd match point is all she needs.
Well done Rona!
