RE: Week 14 - ITF ($25K) - Edgbaston, UK - Hard

Naomi made a good start, going up 30-0, but Mertens won the next 3 points. Naomi saved the break point with an ace ... and now has her first match point:

L16: Naomi Broady WR 216 beat (JE) Elise Mertens (BEL) WR 450 (= CH; top 10 junior last year) by 5-7 6-3 6-4

QF: Naomi Broady WR 216 v (Q) Samantha Murray WR 233

H2H 1-2, all last year - Naomi won in 3 sets in Nottingham, Sam won twice in Canada, once in straight sets, once in 3

Good win and we have a guaranteed semi finalist....

Tara is a break down second set. She needs some points.

Also worth mentioning (though I'm sure many of you are well aware of this) that as well being held 2 weeks later last year (so the points won't come off until late-April), Edgbaston 25K was worth more points last year - e.g. 14 for a QF c.f. 9. Naomi has now matched her 9 points for qualifying then reaching R2 last year while Sam has 10 points here so far (1 for qualifying) c.f. 14 last year.

From a set and a double break down, Tara has won the last 3 games (with 2 breaks) to level the 2nd set - 6-7(7) *4-4. Come on!

Edit: Tara had game points to make it 4 games in a row but sadly Buyukakcay managed to break in the end and will serve for the match 6-7(7) 4-5*

Tara breaks back again!

... only to go 0-30 down on her own serve

Back to 30-30 ... 40-30 ... holds 6-7(7) 6-5*

So much fight from Tara after being well down in both sets but sadly, the Turk takes the 2nd tiebreak too

Full rundown (apologies for the amount of repetition from a few posts back!):

L16: (Q) Samantha Murray WR 233 beat (Q) Misa Eguchi (JPN) WR 221 (CH 213 in 2012) by 3 & 5
L16: (WC) Tara Moore WR 243 lost to (4) Cagla Buyukakcay (TUR) WR 157 (CH 138 in Aug) by 7-6(7) 7-6(4)

QF: Naomi Broady WR 216 v (Q) Samantha Murray WR 233

Naomi v Samantha H2H 1-2, all last year - Naomi won in Nottingham, Sam won twice in Canada

No joy in the doubles for Em

Joss and Anna lost the first set, but as usual are on one of their comebacks and are a break up in the second

Sam and Naomi are a set and a break up

Good contest for GB no1 doubles player between Naomi, Sam, Jade, Joss, Anna, Laura and Heather
