Ed is set up but a break down in the 2nd, while Josh is 5-5 in the 1st. What with Dan dropping a set too, these low/un-ranked young Americans are proving to be as hard to put away as ever.

A bit of info on Ed's opponent - the achievements listed are virtually meaningless to me but may mean something to those of you who know more about college tennis. Seems he's pretty good though.
Hmmm. As someone who's begun to follow it (largely to work out why people kept losing to lower ranked players!) it looks to me like a good career in a not-that-great programme. Mr Corrie's own record was considerably more impressive. But everyone has their day ....
QF: (1) Ed Corrie & Dan Smethurst CR 416 (218+198) vs Chase Buchanan & Connor Smith (USA/USA) CR 1226 (318+908) QF: Alexander Centenari (USA) & Daniel Manlow UNR vs Catalin-Ionut Gard & Dennis Novikov (ROU/USA) CR 1566 (749+817)
And, speaking of university careers, the seemingly innocuous pairing that Messrs Corrie and Smethurst face are far less innocuous than they look. Chase Buchanan, who played with Blaz Rola, had a stellar university career, culminating in his final year, in which the pairing one all three major titles and were named doubles team of the year. And Connor Smith, who attended the same university and graduated last year, wasn't quite in the same league, but was quite a good doubles player. (I hadn't really heard of Smith, but looked him up)
I would still expect Messrs Smethurst and Corrie to be too powerful, but it's not quite as lopsided as the rankings would suggest.

Said Mr Smith rose 220 places to 908 in the doubles came out on Monday, though his career high is 828 (July last year). He's currently ranked only 1338 in the singles...
Hmm. Well, looking at the activity section of the ITF sheet, he's played three doubles tournaments since graduation. Lost in the 1st round of the first one; won the next one (with Marcus Giron); and was finalist in the third (with Dennis Novikov). The standard of doubles teams in the two latter tournaments wasn't exceptionally high, but still ....
Buchanan, incidentally, won les Petits As (things you find when you read his university page).
