RE: Week 12 - Challenger ($40,000+H) - Rimouski, Canada (Hard)

Yes! Dan, who simply wanted it more - fantastic to watch - makes it into his 2nd Challenger singles QF (Jersey 2009, L to Boggo in 3) and has the chance to settle a very old score.

L16: Dan Cox WR 243 v (7) Vincent Millot (FRA) WR 199 (CH 147 in 2011) by 6-7(2) 6-1 6-4
L16: Dan Smethurst WR 270 lost to (2) Yuichi Sugita (JPN) WR 154 (CH 116 in 2012) by 5-7 6-1 6-3

QF: Dan Cox WR 243 v (2) Yuichi Sugita (JPN) WR 154 (CH 116 in 2012)

H2H 0-1 - Sugita won 3 & 2 in juniors in Osaka way back in 2006

Some very long punishing rallies in that last set - great win for Dan.

Alot more UEs creeping into Millots game in sets 2 and 3, but also Dan served alot better.
Will be a good match vs. Sugita.

I remember the Osaka Mayor's Cup match well. I thought that Dan had a chance of winning the tournament but I wasn't aware of how good Sugita was (he hadn't played much before that, you see). Will be nice if Dan can make it to the semis and quit those pesky Futures forever.

In order of completion ... nice work by Mr Cox. From the bits that I saw, he's very consistent, isn't he. Seemed to frustrate Millot, who sooner or later would make an error. Very well done.

And congratulations also to Messrs Smethurst and Corrie:

Ed Corrie & Dan Smethurst CR 547 (297+250) d. Hiroki Moriya & Yuichi Sugita (JPN/JPN) CR 995 (340+655) 0-6, 6-1, 10-2

It looks as if Mr Smethurst has 24 points to defend over the Miami weeks; this covers 15 of them. Mr Corrie is able to add the points outright, I think. Regrettably, next up are

Samuel Groth and Chris Guccione (AUS/AUS) CR 142 (75 + 67)  v. Ed Corrie & Dan Smethurst CR 547 (297+250)

(SC or Steven, did I do this correctly? The drawsheet CR for the 1st seeds is 148, but I've used the rankings for this week, as you seem to have done so for the others)

Had to leave Dan last night half way through that last set.

SO SO pleased to see that he managed to pull it off.

Nice result. Nice Bonus cheque. Nice day all round :)

I didn't see Dan Cox's match, was fast asleep long before then.  I did watch him beat Denis Kudla in Sacremento last year though. I was impressed with his scurrying tenacity but saw nothing to disprove the idea that being a shorty doesn't help in pro tennis. I think the match with Sugita will see plenty of 30 shot rallies and promises to be a bruising encounter. I hope they schedule it for a reasonable hour!

Good luck Dan!

Didn't see Coxy's match, but did see Dan S against Sugita.

Dan Cox must have a decent chance - Sugita looks like a good defensive baseliner and Dan S matched him, but just made more unforced errors at crucial times.

If I remember right, it's available to those who aren't on full funding but I think they still have to sign some kind of contract re behaviour, etc, and whether that's open to all other British players without exception, I'm not sure.
