I am not sure how much the odd ATP is part of any great plan. But if you get the opportunity of a WC into Miami do you turn it down ?? While some of us have questioned its award, Kyle does seem to have a good head on him and can hopefully just take the experience in his stride before getting back to more of the day job of maybe generally mixing challengers with top futures.
Not quite sure how much Kyle is now compromised for potential.grass court WCs come the summer.
I think the Miami WC is great, I was just thinking the level difference between a 15k and an ATP tournament would be quite big. Must be difficult to jump from a 15k playing someone ranked 400 say straight to playing a top 50 player at Miami. Kyle's now had to do that 3 times this year. It's great experience but not exactly easy.
My understanding of the WC system is that any player can only have 5 MDWC's throughout the Circuit Year. However, these only count towards the limit of 5 if the player would have been available for direct entry; otherwise, they don't count.
From rule book - took me ages how to work how to cut and paste on the iPad
Singles. Players may accept up to five (5) main draw singles wild cards into ATP
World Tour tournaments during any ATP Circuit Year. Wild cards shall only count toward the annual limit if the player would have been a direct acceptance on the original acceptance list. Additional exceptions are outlined below.
a) Players who cannot participate in ATP World Tour tournaments and ATP
Challenger Tour tournaments for six (6) months because of a physical injury
may petition the ATP for one additional wild card.
b) In the event that a players position in the South African Airways ATP Rankings
(singles) is insufficient to make him a direct acceptance on the forty-two (42) day acceptance list, then he shall be released from his commitment to that tour- nament, unless offered a wild card to the contract tournament within twenty- four (24) hours of the entry deadline. Such wild card accepted by a player shall not count in the player's annual limitation of five (5) wild cards in singles

thanks everyone. Sounds like, for a player with Kyle's relatively low ranking, he could accept a WC every week and still not reach his limit. By that reckoning he is still on zero isn't he?

If my understanding is correct, then Kyle would indeed be on zero. To contrast that, Andy will be on one after accepting the WC to Rotterdam. Again, that's if my understanding is correct.
I don't know if time has lent to exageration in my mind, but Donald Young seemed to get loads of ATP WCs back in the day when he was going to be the next great American.
I do think there is a case for some limit. If you're good enough, you'll get up there in decent time anyway.
Just looking at Kyles' 16 tournaments since Queens last year to the upcoming Miami Masters, they have comprised :
2 Futures 10Ks
6 Futures 15Ks
2 Challengers
4 ATP 250s
1 ATP Masters
1 Slam
( plus part of 2 Davis Cup squads )
As I said, thankfully he has a good head on him and seems to be able to concentrate on the job in hand at any time.
I would expect that Challenger count to step up majorly. I hadn't realised that he'd played in only 2 in the time he will have played in 6 higher grade tournaments. To be fair, it does look lopsided, witb the major split between Futures and ATP250s ( or above ).
Kyle has had a really very good start to the year, and encouraging going forward.
Let's, however, put a little context to these results.
In Kyle's 15 wins and 1 loss in futures ( with 2 titles and 1 losing final ), he has played only 3 players ranked in the top 400, and has a 2-1 record in 3 pretty competitive looking matches.
USA F3 : lost final vs CRIVOI ( ROU) WR 232 7-6(2) 5-7 0-6
CROATIA F1 : won QF vs DUBARENKO (MDA) WR 332 6-3 7-5
CROATIA F1 : won SF vs IGNATIK (BLR) 7-6(3) 7-6(9)
His 2 ATP 250 losses to much higher ranked players have looked very decent performances.
CHENNAI : lost vs POSPISIL (CAN) WR 32 3-6 5-7
MARSEILLE : lost vs KAMKE ( GER) WR 87 5-7 1-6
So, it has been a very consistent start to the year by Kyle and he has been pretty ruthless in his beating of all these players outside the top 400.
But there are reasons there, and just with his experience generally, why some of us were so alarmed about him seemingly being so touted for a Davis Cup spot ( even his 2 top 300 wins in Croatia and Marseille ATP loss came after the Davis Cup tie vs USA ).
Now, I really want to see Kyle do well, and he is certainly going in the right direction.
But I can't think that some of the to my mind over-hype he gets from various places ( with some OTT adjectives ) does him a lot of favours.
