Boys & Girls: Chang Thailand ITF Juniors, hard - Grade 1 (Week 10)

After a tough 2 weeks in Thailand playing $10K events, ending up by drawing the top seed, Katie Boulter becomes the hunted top seed here. She has a lot of points to defend in the next few weeks, having reached a couple of G1 finals in the 2013 Asian swing, plus winning a G2 in Spain. She opens against a 14 year old wildcard with a less than spectacular record so far. Lewis Roskilly cops a very tough draw against one of the top Aussie juniors

Boys R1 (L64)

(3) Marc Polmans (AUS) v Lewis Roskilly (GBR)

(16) Shao-Chi Yang (TPE) v Rhett Purcell (GBR)

Girls R1 (L64)

(1) Katie Boulter (GBR) v (WC) Watsachoi Sawasdee (THA)

(WC) Chutima Mijaroen (THA) v (10) Freya Christie (GBR)

Katie didn't play today, but Freya took advantage of her draw against a local wildcard, though the boys failed to upset their seeded opponents (on form Rhett's match looked 50-50)

(16) Shao-Chi Yang (TPE) d. Rhett Purcell (GBR) 7-6(3) 4-6 6-3

Girls R1 (L64)

(1) Katie Boulter (GBR) v (WC) Watsachoi Sawasdee (THA)
(10) Freya Christie (GBR) d. (WC) Chutima Mijaroen (THA) 6-0 6-1

Katie very comfortable as expected. Both girls should reach round 3 without too much difficulty, judging from their opponent's records.

(10) Freya Christie (GBR) d. (WC) Chutima Mijaroen (THA) 6-0 6-1

Katie looks like she is in the far east for a while. She is entered and defending points in Malaysia and Phillipines in the next three weeks.

Katie might well get a short term rankings boost this week on her results so far. Freya should jump into the top 80.

Katie edges her way into the semis, where she faces a local star ranked just outside the WTA top 500. She also makes the doubles final with Freya. Although she has made 4 doubles finals in the last year at G1/GA level (including the equivalent event here) she is yet to win one. It is Freya's first final at this level

QF

(1) Katie Boulter (GBR) d. (12) Marketa Vondrousova (CZE) 7-6(5) 7-5

SF

(1) Katie Boulter (GBR) v (6/WC) Kamonwan Buayam (THA)

Doubles SF

(1) Boulter/Christie (GBR) d. (8) Vondrousova/Zovincova (CZE) 6-4 6-2

F

(1) Boulter/Christie (GBR) v (2) Buayam/Kim (THA/KOR)

A minute of footage and, if the caption is to be believed, a thumping 0 & 2 win for Katie against a player ranked in the WTA top 550!

Is Jeremy Bates her coach, or is he just working with the Brits on behalf of the LTA for this trip?

Jeremy is her coach. He was with her at the Manchester 10k.

Thanks for that Steven. I thought, based on the livestreaming the women had last autumn, that Katie B looked amazing - better than Katy D (and that's no criticism of Katy D !). I'm really looking forward to seeing how she progresses.

I think the ITF database may have been failing to update on Saturday. Anyway, now confirmed:

FINAL: (1) Katie Boulter (GBR) v (8) Simona Heinová (CZE)

DOUBLES

(1) Boulter/Christie (GBR) lost to (2) Buayam/Kim (THA/KOR) by 4 & 1

No joy for Katie in both finals losing both in straight sets, but an encouraging week.

Katie's run to both finals here was enough to make her a top 10 junior for the first time - up 8 from her old career high of 18 to no. 10
