Liam got broken serving for the match but then broke Arends again to win it. A better day then - 3-1 v non-Brits and a guaranteed semi-finalist

Oops - usually the s and s help me avoid howlers like that, but I wrote the bit at the top before I posted and the smileys actually appeared. Corrected for that and to reflect the fact that Ymer won the match that was still in progress when I posted.

What other options does he have in the UK? He's in a very difficult position. Travel - and spend money - to qualify in challengers ... high risk, though potentially higher reward. Or come to a local event where he has more chance of doing well, though with lesser rewards on offer. Seems to me he's doing a good job of mixing the two.

I agree. He has to juggle the two. After all, it's not as though Dan is acting outside the norm - at the Spanish 10k this week there are 3 players ranked 228, 244 and 260ish. Even the Turkey one has two players in the top 300. Strangely, the 15ks are weaker - no top 300 in the Italy one and only a WR277 in the French 15k. There's a bit of pot luck but someone in the mid 200s is not strong enough to live by Challengers alone (unless they're zooming up the rankings).
