I'm sure there must be something I'm not aware of or taking into consideration but how come James Ward has climbed 17 places in the rankings just for beating one person whilst Delbonis has only climbed 17 for winning the whole tournament in Sao Paulo.

Because he's not in the top 100 and Delbonis is and the way the points system works tends to mean the gaps tend to get much bigger nearer the top of the ranking list. It's possible for them to close up once in a while (e.g. just 20 points cover 5-7 today) but there is a nearly 4000-point gap between 1 and 2 and over 1500 between 8 and 9.

In this case, the gap between WR 61 and WR 44 (where Delbonis is now) is 146 points, whereas the gap between WR 177 and WR 160 (where James is now) is 50 points.

There may be other reasons (e.g. one or both players having points coming off at the same time, what other players around them did last week, etc), but the bigger gaps higher up is enough on its own to explain it.

 Thanks Stephen - makes sense.
