Good first set, brilliant first game of the second set and then it all went wrong. Errors galore and some very poor shot selection on big points. Evo at his maddening worst.
I'm a bit late for this match sadly (COME ON DAN!) but does anyone know whether you need a TV licence to stream stuff like this? I dont need one otherwise cos i dont watch anything else live, we just use iplayer etc. The TV licencing authority say you need a licence to stream live TV while it is broadcast but does this count as TV being broadcast? Would it even be being broadcast in the UK anywhere?
One silver lining here is that unless he has a run in the doubles he will at least have time to get out to Indian Wells and get some practice on outdoor courts before qualifying starts next Tuesday. A deep run here would have meant a mad scramble to reach Indian Wells in time to play and virtually no practice outdoors.
"La surprise du jour" the tournament's Twitter calls it
I wasn't able to watch but it sounds like that might have been a good thing. Still, Mertl is a top 200 player and all players have bad tournaments - it's trying to have them less often that is key.
For the record:
L32: (3) Dan Evans WR 125 lost to Jan Mertl (CZE) WR 195 (CH 163 in 2007) by 4-6 6-4 6-3

I don't know for sure because it's never been an issue for me, but I believe you only a TV licence to watch a stream if the thing you are watching is being broadcast on TV in the UK at exactly the same time. Hence there might be an issue with main tour events but there shouldn't be a problem with live streams from Challengers or Futures.
