Week 8 - ITF ($25K) - Nottingham, UK Hard

Anna had enough chances there - disappointed that she lost that. Katy may well overtake her in the rankings after this week's points go on.

Yes I was bit surprised to see Sam come here. There was the option of an outdoor hard event in Arizona or she could have played the indoor event in Nottingham.

She went through a dodgy period in the spring last year, so even if it takes her a few weeks to get herself back into form she won't be hurt ranking wise.

That will hurt for Anna. Still seems very erratic since her comeback

I thought by now she'd be back close to the top 300

Presume still recovering from the broken foot in her last tourney - think it was Sharm but not certain about that.

Anna disappointingly slow out of the blocks this year after her good end to last year.

But good to see Katy through, and yes a win in R1 would take her above Anna in the rankings ( 71 points to 70 ). Emily, who currently rounds out the GB top 10, will be on 85 points on Monday week.

Correct - last tweet I saw, she had just had her first hit on a tennis court for a long time. I think she was targeting an April return.

Izzy Wallace gets the last wildcard(not Eleanor)

Nice start for Tara, tough draw for Katy

Not the best draw (apart from Tara, who has done ok out of it) ... lots of opponents seeded and/or at CHs and/or 0-1 H2Hs.

L32: (Q) Manisha Foster WR 720 v Eleni Daniilidou (GRE) WR 257 (CH 14 in 2003)
L32: (Q) Katy Dunne WR 508 v (7) Diana Marcinkevica (LAT) WR 214 (= CH) - H2H 0-1, 2 & 6, Loughborough 2013

L32: (WC) Emily Arbuthnott UNR v Angelica Moratelli (ITA) WR 354 (CH 318 in Sep)
L32: Jade Windley WR 289 v Daniela Seguel (CHI) WR 276 (CH 275 in Jan)
L32: (5) Tara Moore WR 210 v (Q) Amy Bowtell (IRL) WR 634 (CH 449 in Jun) - H2H 4-1 all in GB 10Ks, 2-0 last year

L32: (WC) Freya Christie WR 1031 v Irina Ramialison (FRA) WR 280 (= CH)
L32: (WC) Isabelle Wallace UNR v (3) Carina Witthöft (GER) WR 176 (= CH)

L32: (WC) Laura Deigman WR 779 v (8) Pemra Özgen (TUR) WR 217 (CH 209 in Sep)
L32: Naomi Broady WR 226 v Ana Vrljic (CRO) WR 223 (CH 180 in Aug) - H2H 0-1, 6 & 3, Trabzon 2013

Gaps are between quarters.

Well, we have 8 unseeded girls and 5 of them have managed to avoid seeded players all together in the draw, and the two of the three who have drawn seeds have got the 8th and 7th seeds.

I don't think that, on paper, you could really have got a better draw. The fact that the H2Hs are unfavourable just means that the British girls are a little weaker, which we know already because four of them are WCs and 2 are qualifiers.

When you put it that way, it does make me think about my initial impression of the draw! Obviously, these draws are always going to look tough when we have so little depth in the women's game at the moment (in the number of players in the top 500 sense), and many of those who could be competitive at this level are either playing at higher levels or injured.

Indeed, while all the Brits except Tara are outranked by their opponents, the outranking is very slight in the case of Jade and Naomi.

I suppose I was hoping for Katy to get a better draw (though she pushed Marcinkevica very close in the 2nd set last time) and thinking that with things as they are at the moment, at least one all-GB match in R1 (especially among the Qs and WCs) is probably something to be hoped for rather than disappointed about.

So maybe not that bad a draw after all, but still very tough for most of them. I think getting 2 through would be about par, 3 is what I am hoping for, and there is maybe an outside chance of 4 if they all play their best.

The ( self appointed ) ref says that it is inbetween :) The draw could quite easily both have been better and worse.

Ah, well, you know what people say about refs . . . . :)

So, Isabelle will get a ranking at the end of this ? Now three points from three wild-cards? (more obviously if she wins, which is v. unlikely, she truly does have a bad draw).

Fingers crossed for Naomi and Jade (and Tara). Will be interesting to see how Katy and Freya and Manisha do.

Surprised that Jasmine AA didn't want/get a WC - she's got 7 points from 2 events so 1 more point would make a decent-ish ranking for her. She was playing some long matches on the Tour last week or before - hope she's not injured. Maybe her plans are quite well defined anyway (or I've missed something obvious).
