RE: Week 7 - ATP 500 - Rotterdam (Hard)

Thiem takes the second set and it was completely deserved. He has got better as the match has gone while Murray has just got worse and worse.

Oh dear, oh dear. One set all. Well, Andy did say he needed match practice. He's sure getting it - but if he doesn't pull his socks up - and stop doing stupid drop-shots - he'll find this is his last match this week.

Muzz - never finish a match in 90 minutes when you can make it last a hour longer!

To be fair, Thiem has played some good stuff in the bits of the match I've seen.

L16: (2/WC) Andy Murray WR 6 beat (Q) Dominic Thiem AUT WR 113 (= CH) by 6-4 3-6 6-3

QF: (2/WC) Andy Murray WR 6 v Marin Cilic (CRO) WR 37 (CH 9 in 2010)

H2H  in seniors: 9-1

Cilic has won his last 7 matches in straight sets but Andy has won their last 6 encounters!

So Andy got there in the end, though not without a struggle (the match lasted two hours & 22 minutes), taking the decider by 6-3, but I'll bet the youngster's chuffed to bits at taking a set off "the Wimbledon champion" & pushing him so close! wink

Heard a lot about the Thiemster but never seen him play until tonight. Well impressed.

I'm exhausted after that. I hope Andy can recover by tomorrow - he did seem to be struggling physically as well as with his form. Cilic is playing very well at the moment - Goran Ivanisevic seems to have improved him a great deal.

Of course Thiem is one of those youngsters who was in the same junior group as the likes of Oli/Liam/George. Always a little frustrating that a player with a similar amount of ability as our 3 in juniors makes the senior translation look alot easier. This is certainly not a dig against our players just an observation.

Hmm, maybe fair to a limited extent, but for me a lot is down to the individuals. For instance, I thought there were far too many "oh wow is me !" comparisons ( who's looking at you, korriban ? :) ) being made last year, particularly in respect of Oli, of different similar age players.

It is not being a little wise after the event to mention Oli's progress recently, because last year quite a number of us were saying that different players mature at different rates and that Oli was possibly still a very good prospect if just taking time to mature in a number of areas.

Also we will be well aware of players like Thiem from other countries, who have made a very good junior to senior transition and probably don't pick up on many that haven't. No doubt the Austrian Tennis Discussion Forum could find some examples.

And here Kyle has made a very good transition as against say Oli initially ( and probably some players from other countries ). But I wouldn't put money on which of these two will ultimately go further.

Cushion, Drew, cushion. I think I'm on #53 now, the others are all in tatters.

I know Oli can be a bit brash at times, but surely it's "woe is me"?

Oli is still a huge prospect, he was when he was is in the duldrums last year, and is still now. Anyone who saw his demolition of the 10k draw at Newcastle nearly 2 years ago( at only 18), would be mad to say anything else. I was just making the observation that this Thiem guy was making eye catching progress, whereas our juniors other than Andy tend to take a little longer. I think in 5 years time, we'll have maybe as many as 4 top 100 players and much more strength in depth.
