RE: Week 7 - Thailand F1 ($10,000) - Nonthaburi (Hard)

Marcus has played Wachimaranowong once before, at Phuket in 2012 - the Thai player won in 3 sets 6-3 3-6 6-3.

Always nice to win against someone who beat you last time.

Next up for Marcus is the chinese player, Gong, who beat the number 6 seed easily.

Its a sign of improvement Compared with last year  when Marcus lost in 3 sets so was nice to rebalance the record books

That's an odd name for a Chilean, I thought (seriously though, it's always seemed a bit odd that Chile got CHI rather than China when the latter is so much bigger - it probably gives rise to frequent misinterpretations) ... they've also played once before:

QF: (4) Marcus Willis WR 387 v Gong Mao-Xin (CHN) WR 759 (CH 294 in 2011)

H2H 1-0 - Marcus beat Gong 0 & 4 in Eilat in 2010.

Gong actually got a main draw wild card in Shanghai ATP last year and took 7 games off Kohlschreiber in R1. However, he is a player who has tried to move up to Challengers and failed - lots of R1 Challenger losses are the reason why his ranking is so low these days.

There's a big difference between punning a name and making borderline racist remarks. I think we all know Gary Lewis is a bit of a prat, but this is going to far

I must admit, I didn't even know what the word meant, but looking it up, it appears to be classed as "very offensive", hence me asterisking it out in the post above, having deleted the original.

I don't think there's anything wrong with the odd friendly banter word, such as we use for the French, for example but words that are generally seen as very offensive/racist have to get zapped.

I accept that given that I didn't know what the word meant, the line might have been fairly fine here but I'd rather be safe than sorry.

Steven, I did a double take when I saw the original, shortly after it was posted.  Then it came back to me, having see one or two films set in Vietnam at the time of the American invasion.  I debated about warning Gary and/or deleting it.  I then wondered whether anyone would pick it up, but in the end - obviously - I left it.    I'll know better next time, though I sincerely hope there isn't one.

Well the comment did cause me to raise my eyebrows although I got the impression that Gary was confused as opposed to deliberately making a derogatory remark.
