RE: Davis Cup 2014 - World Group Quarter-Final - 4-6 Apr - ITA v GB

R1: James Ward WR 161 lost to Fabio Fognini (ITA) WR 13 (= CH) by 6-4 2-6 6-4 6-1

Great effort from Wardy really though - that's Foggy's 11th straight Davis Cup singles win on clay and even Juan Mónaco didn't manage to take a set off him on clay in R1 this year, and that tie was played in Argentina!

James Ward, the man no one wants to play in Davis Cup. Well done.

I know it's been said before, but how high would James be ranked if he played like that all the time! (I'm not needing an answer to that!!) Some of it was awesome!

Good effort indeed again by James, who by the way was my pick for both our Davis Cup ties this year, and I am sure I am far from alone :) ( that Kyle was ever thought likely by some to play the USA tie still dumbfounds me ).

Fognini has often played better of course, but that was still a good level overall from James.

Happy to see James get a set against Fabio, who's had a great past 12 months. Obviously, the tie will probably hinge on Saturday's doubles rubber but it's a nice feeling that you can't rule James out of beating Seppi.

I keep forgetting about this tie which is weird, so missed all the action from today.

Looks like a fantastic match from Ward to push Fognini though!

Spectacular effort from Wardy, Andy just doing enough so far.

Also like to say that the new chief executive ain't exactly following on from Rog in the same style, seen supporting the lads from the stands dressed in very casual gear wearing a plastic GB hat !

Well done to Ward, second match coming much as expected. But nothing GB or Italy could do today would compete with the drama that is Germany v France. Wow. And wouldn't say tomorrow's doubles was a foregone conclusion for the French, either. Tsonga clearly not going to be able to play; Monfils erratic in doubles; Benneteau and Llodra good, but it's asking a lot of Benneteau.

Absolutely tipping it down in Naples again. Hope they've got the covers sorted properly this time.

I set the recorder for Wardy's match, but it started so late I didn't get it! I saw bits of Andy's match but couldn't give it full attention as one of the Other Half's occupational therapists was here all afternoon, and then I had to make a meal. . . but I DID get that recorded, so will probably watch it tomorrow night. I should be able to see the morning play (if it isn't delayed too much!)

Did Andy seem OK on the clay?

 Thanks steven.

Well done to Wardy, another good showing. Not an easy match, he just got abit down/nervous towards the end. Let's hope he can step it up if needed on Sunday.
