KerPhau. Is that the knockout blow.

Dan is broken again and Phau serves for the match at *5-4

Lost 3 and 4

Very poor result and with how the main draw was a missed opportunity.

I would agree with that especially as Phau is 34 years old and ranked 358 in the world - not that we should judge everything by that

FQR: (q3) Dan Evans WR 146 lost to Björn Phau (GER) WR 359 (CH 59 in 2006) by 3 & 4

He now has to hope Kuznetsov beats Pavic to at least leave him first in line for a LL place, but the Croatian is a set up.

Darn. I had to leave it to deal with one of the other half's medical appointments and missed most of it. Ah well, maybe just as well considering the result. Where does he go from here?

Kuznetsov took the second set, though, so all hope is not lost yet.

Kuznestsov came back to win in 3 so Dan is first in line for a LL spot.

I don't want to wish injury on any player, but. . .

if a player is particularly tired or carrying a slight injury after a long weekend of Davis Cup tennis you would advise them to think carefully before playing this week.

Both Haas and Kohlschreiber picked up injuries in the Germans Davis Cup win this weekend. German team had to forfeit the reverse singles because neither could go - you'd think there is a chance that one or both might not make it ???

Would Evans have known beforehand - may account for perceived lacklustre performance ??

Haas and Kohlschreiber both have 1st round byes so won't have to play until Thursday.  They may feel sufficiently recovered by then. What is the deadline for withdrawing hurt in these circumstances?

Just before they are due on court to play their matches. However I can't see Evo hanging round in Zagreb till Thursday.
