RE: Week 5 - Great Britain F3 ($10,000) - Sheffield (Hard)

Dave will play Bloomers in R2 - happy to see Richard get the win but got to feel a bit sorry for the other Richard - Bloomers is a bad draw to get in R1 of a Futures event on the days when his back holds up.

Josh was in the relatively rare position of being a seed playing a higher-ranked opponent in R1 - Lestienne had overtaken him in yesterday's rankings. In fact, had the seedings been based on this week's rankings, Richard Gabb would have been seeded ahead of both of them.

A big win for Clay - he beats George (1294 places above him) 6-3 6-7(3) 6-3 and gets Lestienne next.

Dan Cox beats James Marsalek 7-6(4) 6-3 - competitive but the H2H is now 4-0, the last 3 in straights

Ashley is in deep trouble against Boutillier, who is serving for the match 1-6 5-6*

Boutillier wins 1 & 5, so the French are now 2-0 v GB seeds today

It was almost a great win for Marshall Tutu, who led by *3-1 at one point in the second set:

L32:  (Q) Myles Orton WR 1147 defeated (Q) Marshall Tutu WR UNR by 3-6 7-6(5) 6-4

Tom doing much better than I dared hope against Couacaud - already up a set and a break 6-4 3-0*

Harry is a set up against Maiga 6-3 *2-3

Dan S is a set up against Olin 6-2 *1-2

2nd seed Mertens is a break down to Griekspoor (K) in the 1st set too!

At least Farq got the better of Couacaud in straight sets (4 & 3). smile

And Dan S won by 6-2 2-2 retired.

Yes, a good win, given that Couacaud is slightly higher-ranked than him and on the rise

Meanwhile, Maiga has taken the 2nd set against Harry but the Brit has just gone a break up in the decider - 6-3 3-6 *2-0

Peter Ashley is an early break up against Rosenzweig

Edit:

Another win for Harry, who sails through the decider smile.gif - 6-3 3-6 6-1 - he will probably play 2nd seed Mertens, who is fighting back.

Peter has taken the 1st set against Rosenzweig too smile.gif

Edit:

Wins for Ed & Neil.

Rosenzweig won the 2nd set against Peter and then went 3-0* up in the 3rd but the young Brit then won 5 games in a row and has just served for the match, only to get broken to 15.

Peter breaks again ... can he serve it out this time?

A pretty good day for the Brits. There should be a GB finalist in the top half, bottom half may be reliant on Dave Rice again.

Nice to see Peter Ashley justify his wildcard, good wins for Tom F, Clay, Bloomers, Neil P and Harry, but George and Ashley should have won. Slightly disappointed by Richard Gabb and Josh Goodall, I was expecting more.

Guaranteed 4 out of 8 QF and I can see Neil having the best chance of defeating a foreigner.

I think the overall winner will come from one of the Dans - probably "fancy" Dan

PS still not looking great for Bob's 20 in top 500. Marzi struggling, Josh M has disappeared, Neil P has had a slow start, JWH getting nasty draws. No one else really pushing on yet.

Great to see encouraging performances from the lesser known players yesterday. Nice to see Peter get his first point, especially considering the score line in their pervious match. Great to Harry Meehan getting another point under his belt as well, hopefully the work with Josh is starting to pay off and a shock could be in store against Mertens?...maybe not. Does anyone have any insight into what's happened to Ashley Hewitt? I really expected him to push on this year but he's had a hugely disappointing start to 2014 so far. Is he recovering from an injury, not prepared sufficiently over the winter break, over ranked?

Yes, agree, it was a pretty good day yesterday.

With 11 victories, there were:

from the top 25 players : 6 wins, 4 losses

from outside the top 25: 5 wins, 4 losses

it's definitely nice to see some of the others get amongst the points (very pleased for Clay).

Re Ashley, he had a pretty sad time in Asia last autumn when he tried challenger qualifiers - Richard Gabb sort of held his own, but Ashley came away with absolutely nothing. I don't know how that affected him.

This comes as no surprise:

QF:  Rémi Boutillier & Enzo Couacaud (FRA/FRA) UNR "defeated" (2) Richard Gabb & Josh Ward-Hibbert CR 667 (352+315) by a walkover

6 Brits already on court this morning.

Ed C v Tom F is 1-1
Myles v Dan S *1-2
Pauffers v Van Duim is also 1-1
Harry is *1-2 on serve with Mertens.

So no breaks anywhere so far.

First break of the day goes to Harry who now leads *3-2 against 2nd seed Mertens.

Get in there.
