L32: (WC) Jazzamay Drew UNR v Natasha Fourouclas (RSA) WR 716 (CH 474 in 2012)
L32: (LL) Jessica Simpson WR 977 v Anna Katalina Alzate Esmurzaeva (NED) WR 651 (CH 631 in Nov)
Fourouclas reached the final 2 weeks ago but went out 2 & 2 to Pous-Tío in R1 last week. In her last two singles matches against Brits, she lost to Manisha then beat Dasha in November.
After beating Fourouclas 2 & 2 in R1, Pous-Tío then beat Jessica's opponent, Alzate, by the same score in R2. The latter reached the final of a 10K in Bogotá in October.

Neither player will get through. Jess in particular has been a disappointment in her transition from junior to senior.
In fairness, I think both her serve and forehand have improved over the last 6 months, the serve particularly, but oh dear, that backhand. She really tries to avoid hitting it, and I think it is really holding her back in the adult game.

I see that she's playing with Dommie Cov. in the doubles - guess Jess takes the forehand side then !
NB never seen Jess play. What's the problem with her backhand ? It's a double hander, isn't it? It's about the easiest shot in tennis - really strange for it to be complete shocker.
Last time I saw her play, CD, the backhand just looked a bit cramped and she struggled to get any consistency and real control with it. I might be totally wrong, but she was such a tall strong and athletic junior, I wonder if she was able to easily avoid hitting backhands in the junior game and win matches just by dominating with her good forehand. It just looked like she didn't have a lot of confidence in it and was always trying to get round and hit a forehand if at all possible. For all I know, maybe she had a reason that day for avoiding the backhand, but I did see her play as a junior and I remember the backhand as just being a defensive get the ball back in play kind of shot.

I guess so. But actually Jessica is a very good doubles player. Reads the play well and is a confident volleyer - and with those long arms and legs is hard to pass.
Jess takes the 2nd set 6-2 This is despite serving 11 double faults (often on game point, according to 'undisclosed sources' - you know who you are LOL) to her opponent's 2.
Jazzamay ended up losing 5 of the last 6 games, unfortunately - she only held serve once (in 8 attempts) in the whole match
