Week 4 - Challenger ($50,000) - Maui, Hawaii, USA (Hard)

L32: James Ward WR 165 v (6) Denis Kudla (USA) WR 113 (CH 90 in Jul)
L32: Dan Evans WR 150 v Austin Krajicek (USA) WR 226 (CH 210 in Jul)

The latter a bit odd, given that all indications are that Evo is currently in Nottingham confuse

Kudla beat James 6-2 4-6 6-3 in Roland Garros qualifying in 2012.

Actually, re-checking NPA's tweet, it says "Good to have @Evo151216 Dan Evans training with the guys this week. Always welcome. #environment" which could easily imply that he's been there for the past week, so maybe he is flying out to Hawaii after all, who knows.

OEM's thoughts towards the end of a report in Thursday's print edition of The Times on Colin's & Ross's first-round win at the AO which digressed into the doubles selection debate for the DC, as Leon Smith was apparently watching the match:

What will not have endeared him to Smith is the decision of Dan Evans, the British No 2, to return home from here rather than play a challenger in Hawaii - a trip that had been planned for him - and try to pick up points and momentum.  Evans failed to qualify here and feels his game is best suited to some rest at home.  Many would beg to differ.

James Ward, who remained in Melbourne and will play in Hawaii, and Kyle Edmund, 19 and playing futures events in Florida on clay, have improved their prospects of a place as the second singles player to compete alongside Andy Murray.

Wait, so are any of the DC rumours of Evo not being picked actually true?

It is hard to say exactly what is going on but I can't imagine that both Neil Harman and Mike Dickson have reported something that is completely inaccurate. If I were a betting man I would put money on Dan having decided not to go to Hawaii but having once again lacked the professionalism to withdraw from the tournament during the proper time frame. I hope to be proven wrong.

If the journos did get it right and he'd already decided to withdraw over a week ago, it would indeed be pretty shocking not to have let the organisers know

So let's hope he turns up there, or that he did withdraw and it, er, got lost in the ether.

Would be an interesting" itinerary. Melbourne to the UK to Hawaii to California ( there's a kinda illogical part somewhere in there )

Ever since these US Challengers following the US Open ( when I thought he actually did OK, compared to some other thoughts ), Evo seems to have really got into this "rest" thing ! How not to push on ??

Brilliant if it's been more training than rest, and if however batty it may appear it actually really does help him and if he's going to appear ( well already appeared surely ) in Hawaii somewhat revitalised.

A few ifs in there though...

I doubt that anybody will be surprised to discover that the draw has been amended and that a certain player has been replaced by another Qualifier / Lucky Loser.

Well, on the grounds that it's always better not to think ill of people if one can help it, I was actually rather hoping that there wouldn't be an amendment to the draw, and that it wouldn't be the case that Mr Evans had withdrawn without notifying the organisers. So, a bit of a surprise, yes, if not wholly one. But perhaps there are good reasons.

There are 6 qualifying spaces, the top of the main draw is occupied by seed no 9, and the qualifying draw only allows for 4 winners.

Krajicek is down to play a qualifier, so that looks as though Dan just ain't there.

For better or for worse, it is probably worth noting that Dan's own profile on his twitter account is:

Pro tennis player.. Just doing what i do. It is what it is.

About sums it up . . . :)

According to the ATP site though he's still in the draw to play Krajicek, the only withdrawal being Bogomolov?

Confused....confuse

Priesty, if you look at the "live draws" section of the live scoreboard, you will see that it shows Austin Krajicek as playing a qualifier.

I was hoping that perhaps the tournament organisers had made the mistake, but I feel that it is unlikely that they made the draw without double and triple checking. All pro tournaments have good administrators and strict procedures....I hope there is some good explanation or Dan will get an absolute slating.   I imagine there will be some ATP sanction as well.

Will be interesting to see the reason on the bottom of draw sheet once it's updated on the ATP site. Wonder if they'll go with a simple 'absent' rather than list some sort of ailment.
