Week 4 - ITF ($25K) - Sunderland, UK (Hard)

JoKo is likely to be the top seed here, with Tara, Jade (who looks to have scraped in at the last moment) and wild cards Anna Smith, Dasha Konotoptseva, Beth Askew and Jasmine Asghar also in the main draw.

QR1: (wc) Charlotte Pearce UNR v (q1) Myrtille Georges (FRA) WR 304
QR1: (q15) Manisha Foster WR 742 v Demi Schuurs (NED) WR 1109
QR1: (wc) Dominique Covington UNR v (q2) Agnes Bukta (HUN) WR 315
QR1: Nicola George UNR v (q10) Eva Wacanno (NED) WR 542
QR1: Sabrina Bamburac UNR v (q3) Angelica Moratelli (ITA) WR 352
QR1: Jessica Simpson WR 981 v (q9) Anna Danilina (KAZ) WR 541
QR1: Nicole Peterson UNR v (q4) Martina Borecka (CZE) WR 373 - winner plays (q13) Bowtell (IRL) or Paterova (CZE)
QR1: Mollie Crouch UNR v (q5) Tereza Malikova (CZE) WR 392 - winner plays (q11) Sabino (SUI) or Boeykens (BEL)
QR1: (wc) Farel Abdelaziz UNR v (q6) Viktoriya Tomova (BUL) WR 406
QR1: (wc) Sabrina Federici UNR v (q16) Quirine Lemoine (NED) WR 819
QR1: Jessica Ren WR 1060 v (q7) Sviatlana Pirazhenka (BLR) WR 474
QR1: (q12) Lucy Brown WR 603 v Kyria Dunford UNR
QR1: (q8/wc) Katy Dunne WR 526 v Mariam Bolkvadze (GEO) WR 1206
QR1: (wc) Grace Dixon UNR v (q14) Lina Stanciute (LTU) WR 725

Not great draws for the GB seeds (Manisha in the Glasgow runner-up's section, Lucy likely to face Pirazhenka again and Katy in line to meet an ex-top 200 player) and it will be a major surprise if any of the unseeded Brits survive QR1.

Not quite sure what Dasha has done of late to earn a WC, as against say Manisha. Getting some matches ( and hopefully wins ) in in qualifying might have helped her.

Yes, that's a weird one - the last time Dasha won a singles set in an ITF pro event was in R1 in Sharm el Sheikh back in August (she has lost 8 matches since, all in straight sets) and her last two 25Ks have both seen her go out to Rona Berisha in QR1. I don't think she has won any British Tours recently, but I doubt it would mean an automatic main draw wild card into a 25K even if she had. Maybe there's a local link.

Maybe she just asked for one and others didn't.  As a player is only allowed 3 MD WCs in 12 months, not all players are eager to take them at each event which offers them.  If they feel they may qualify anyway or have their eyes on a WC for something later in they year, they may well say no or not apply.  But yes, agree Dasha seems a player less likely to take advantage of getting one.

Good point.

Also, if there a toss up between two players and no special considerations for either, sometimes the higher ranked player will be granted it, just to avoid accusations of bias. On the entry sheet, Dasha is 6 places higher than Manisha in the WR.

Thanks, The Optimist, good point about the WC limitations. Certainly quite a bit more to it than who is the most deserving, which is rather in the eye of the beholder anyway.

( give me a few months to forget this before I go - why the heck... )

Anyway, Manisha has ended up in a very unfortunate slot in the draw.

I can only see 1st rnd wins for Manisha, Lucy and Katy. Grace Dixon has the best chance of an upset.

Only expect Katy to qualify.

No-one has officially withdrawn, so not sure if Jade has made the main draw or has withdrawn.

Is Sam Murray injured again? She hasn't played for a couple of months.

Think Sam Murray is going to Australia then America for 50k and 100k same as Naomi.

That draw really is tough for the lower ranked / unranked GB girls ( or at least it's more just a tough field since they had to play a seed ). An experience anyway, but we shouldn't expect miracles.

I can only realistically see the 3 QR1 wins that paulisi does. Love to see a shock result from another GB girl.

The British interest not looking too healthy at the moment (although, as mentioned above, they're nearly all of them hitting above their weight).

Even Manisha has lost the first set (although, for her, that might just be a warm-up)

Nicola George is 5-5 against the WR 542, which is good to see, and Jess Ren also currently holding her own. Wouldn't hold your breath though . . .

Manisha reacted to the loss of the 1st set by winning the next 5 games though she just got broken serving for the set. The other two you mentioned ended up losing their 1st sets (& Nicola the 2nd too), though they did win more games than I thought they might.

Results / in progress so far:

QR1: (wc) Charlotte Pearce UNR lost to (q1) Myrtille Georges (FRA) WR 304 by 2 & 2
QR1: (q15) Manisha Foster WR 742 trails Demi Schuurs (NED) WR 1109 by 3-6 5-2* hmm
QR1: (wc) Dominique Covington UNR lost to (q2) Agnes Bukta (HUN) WR 315 by 2 & 1
QR1: Nicola George UNR lost to (q10) Eva Wacanno (NED) WR 542 by 5 & 2
QR1: Jessica Ren WR 1060 trails (q7) Sviatlana Pirazhenka (BLR) WR 474 by 4-6 *1-3 hmm
QR1: (q12) Lucy Brown WR 603 beat Kyria Dunford UNR by 1 & 0
