Just looking back at the smileys I added during the day (they only become at-a-glance clear when I post them and they turn into pictures!), I see only 3 of the GB matches ended up as rankings upsets - Maia v Beth wasn't really an upset (Maia led the H2H and will no doubt be ranked soon), I doubt many of us expected Dasha (now on an 8-match losing streak) to beat the relatively in-form Touly, so that wasn't really an upset either, so we're left with Manisha's big win, where I thought there might be a decent chance.
The only other Brits I thought had a realistic hope of a win were Lana (who knows what might have happened had she edged that 1st set tiebreak) and perhaps Nicola - the latter didn't work out too well!
So although 6/16 doesn't sound that great, it's about what we could reasonably have expected after the draw was made, i.e. 3 wins from all-GB matches, Anna, Katy and one rankings upset from Manisha or Lana.

Great result from Manisha. Lucy continues to disappoint.
Excellent performance from Grace. I saw her play Touly in Manchester and she played some great tennis in the first set, but fell away. I think Grace could easily get several ranking points this year if she sticks with it. Jade I think is overranked.
As for the next round, we should see wins for Tara, Anna, and hopefully Katy and Manisha although I think Jade will get turned over.
With her currently at WR 742 ( just off her CH of WR 732 ), she has lots of potential upside to her ranking in the next few months. She has nothing to come off until 4 points on 26/05, and also even if and when her points total doesn't move up, with the ranking points changes this year, then all else being equal her ranking is quite likely to improve anyway.
She has already insured that she will overtake Dasha to become GB no 15 ( that does seem the right way round on form of late ) and in the next few months I can see her hunting down not just the now retired Mel, but also Lucy.
Outside GB top 10 bet for year end ? ( if say she could pass the currently injured Lisa and Amanda, and also Emily - though I would like to see all 3 of them getting fit, where applicable asap, and earning good points ).
All that said and pondered, I guess that we shouldn't read too much into such early season results...
Wow! Maia has taken the 1st set against Tara 6-3. Maia playing the match of her life? Delayed jetlag for Tara? I imagine the bookies still expect Tara to win in the end but it'll be interesting to see how this unfolds.
