30-30 again ... and Grigelis gets match point ... saved ... but now another one ... also saved ... but now a 3rd one ...

FINAL: (6) Dan Smethurst WR 403 lost to (1) Laurynas Grigelis (LTU) WR 257 (CH 183 in 2012) by 7-5 6-7(4) 7-5

Gutted for Dan, but what a battle and another very encouraging week for him overall.

Can't do it this time sadly and Grigelis wins 7-5 in the third.

Total points won 118-118   There's a joke in there somewhere but maybe now isn't the time.

Gutted.

Sounds like a terrific match. Yes, a tough loss - but still a great start to the year and a great base on which to build.

Hard to see any of our guys beating Grigelis. I watched a couple of his matches at Edgbaston in October (His third British futures win in 3 weeks) and he is clearly a step up from the likes of Corrie, Rice and Smethurst.

Looks like Dan did his best to prove me wrong. Hopefully someone can go further next week and end Grigelis's run on British soil.

Shame so many GB top 25 players all fighting for the same points -

Ideally in my opinion it would benefit our players if they were dispersed globally but I am sure the decision to play in GB  is driven by economics

Or, you know, the fact that it's relatively local.

It would probably be more interesting if the GB players were much more dispersed.

Whether it would work out better overall for them ranking pointswise I'd say is very debatable. But, yes, would add to their experience.

However, in all the circumstances, putting on a string of GB futures one after the other, possibly more especially early on in the season, has had predictable consequences.

ITF rules recommend putting on futures in the same countries in four week periods hence why you get a string.

It would be nice if there was a travel fund for GB players to play overseas tournaments, especially at this time of year when everyone is fit and playing.
