RE: British Tour 2014

They seem to be dropping like flies at Edgbaston.

Helen Parish had to retire after losing the first set to Alannah Griffin.

And then Alannah withdrew from the next match v Nicole Peterson (who beat Anna F).

Rebecca Smaller posted a great two-set win over Grace Dixon and then had to withdraw.

And Jess Ren beat Lauren McMinn when Lauren retired after losing a tight first set.

Jess v Nicole in the final

Because we'd been talking about young Ema Lazic (age fifteen and a quarter) on one of the junior threads, just to mention that's she in the final of this week's British Tour, and will play Lucy Brown.

Lucy won 6-0, 7-6(5).  A good effort by young Ema once she got going!

just to mention that, after Ema, they get younger and younger!

Ola Pitak is in the quarter finals, having beaten Georgie Craven and Emily Crowe.

Ola won various 12U (!!!!) events last year so, at best, she's 13, maybe still 12 !!!!!

(David C will know)

Wow, still 12?

But, yes, I believe she's British (although maybe not with British parents? Not that it matters, obviously, but following on from Ema Lazic, it's quite interesting . . . )

This is Ola's brief biog (from Tennis First) - she turns 13 in a month's time: "Ola started playing tennis when she was 5 years old and has trained ever since with her father Slawek and older sister Kasia. She began 2014 as the No.1 ranked player in the country U12, having won the 2013 Clay Court Championships and other national tour competitions earning a place in the U12 Nike Junior Tour Finals. Ola has already represented Great Britain in international events. At the moment Ola is playing all age group categories and is looking forward to playing ITF tournaments when she turns 13. Apart from tennis Ola loves reading and singing with Kasia. They have performed on stage together on a couple of occasions!"

Thanks David.

Ola gave a walkover to Lucy (maybe injured, maybe just tired, maybe had something esle planned because she never expected to get this far?).

However, Eden continued her Egyptian good run of form, beating Lucy in two sets in the semis

Again, congrats to Eden who wins the BT event at Warwick, 6-0 7-6(2) against Natasha Hillyer

Let the band play on . . .

Both Harriet Dart and Beth Askew have zoomed through to the British Tour Bolton final, barely dropping more than a couple of games along the way.

Michaela Ince (ex junior 117 and now full-time coach) beat Rona Berisha 6-1 6-0, which seems harsher than one might have imagined but . .

Jasmine is cruising and now plays Michaela. Hillyer and Gibson in the other semi

There's a youtube video of Rona playing Katy D and it's a particularly horrendous performance from Rona, doesn't look like there's much potential there beyond the serve. That said, it's 9mins of one match.

It's difficult, isn't it . . . . the other post-er saw Rona play down at Gloucester and was blown away and thought she had the whole package. And Rona posted a score of 5-7 3-6 against Pera, the WR 385 or so, who went all the way to win the title. So that was, presumably, a really good performance.
But she's certainly struggled in Bournmouth.
Maybe the clay doesn't suit her and she's better on hard (although that'd surprise me slightly). Maybe Gloucester was better than normal and Bournmouth worse than normal.

I saw her last year (also on hard court) and was quite impressed - not really the serve, just overalll athleticism, intensity and well-roundedness. But I probably wouldn't have put her higher than WR800 or so. . .. who knows . . .
