Lost 4 games on the bounce in the first set, only to go and serve to bagel Tearney in the second.

Nice to see 2 Brits make it through - it was Rhett's first match in an ATP-ranked event too, having won a Grade 5 and reached the final of a Grade 4 in NZ in the autumn.

QR1: Cameron Norrie WR 979 beat Finn Tearney (NZL) WR 1123 (CH 1114 in Nov) by 2-6 5-0 ret.
QR1: (wc) Rhett Purcell UNR beat (wc) Eric Sock (USA) UNR (Jack's brother) by 2 & 4
QR1: (wc) Ross Hutchins UNR lost to Maxime Chazal (FRA) WR 448 (CH 440 in Oct) by 4 & 5

QR2: Cameron Norrie WR 979 v (q2) Lukas Lacko (SVK) WR 81 (CH 44 in 2013)
QR2: (wc) Rhett Purcell UNR v (q8) Michael Venus (NZL) WR 401 (CH 274 in 2011)

Quite a difference in ranking between the top and bottom seeds in qualifying here!

Presumably because most players ranked in the 100-300 bracket are/were planning to play Aussie open qualifying.

Yes, I realise that's why it is - I haven't noticed such extremes at ATP qualifying before though (doesn't mean they haven't happened, obviously)

Doubles - lots of Brit interest smile :

R1:  Eric Butorac & Raven Klaasen (USA/RSA) CR 91 (47+44) vs Paul Hanley (AUS) & Jonny Marray CR 105 (66+41)
R1:  (WC) Jose (Rubin) Statham & Michael Venus (NZL/NZL) CR 275 (148+127) vs (3) Jamie Murray & John Peers (AUS) CR 59 ( 30+29)
R1:  (WC) Colin Fleming & Ross Hutchins UNR vs André Begemann & Martin Emmrich (GER/GER) CR 91 (49+42)

Interesting to see Jonny in harness with one of Jamie's former partners.  He could've done worse. wink  Freddie N's in the top half of  the draw with Igor Sijsling.

Nice draw for the third seeds, less so for the other two ... though presumably the WC means Messrs Fleming and Hutchins haven't had to use the protected ranking, so that's a bonus! (Or am I wrong on that)

Messrs Hanley and Marray are planning to play together regularly, are they not?

Correct on both counts.

Correct [...]

I feel terribly out of touch.  I was completely unaware of that particular development, but am really pleased to hear about it.

A very decent effort by Cam given the opposition!
