Unfortunately Laura looked to be having some trouble with her wrist injury from very early on in the match, and while it didn't seem to be affecting her play in any obvious way it's not a surprise decision with the Australian Open a week away. A frustrating start to the season for Laura.
Commiserations to Ms Robson. She has had more than her share of her frustration: I hope she is able to recover well for the AO and for the rest of the year, and to enjoy a good season.
I think this week has achieved what it was intended though. She has got some match time and blown off a few cobwebs, and was playing to a reasonable standard against a tricky opponent. She's given the wrist an outing without putting it under too much stress.
I am worried about the wrist but I'm not sure there was any expectation of her playing a run of matches here.
Anyone been counting the huge number of abandons and withdrawals over the last week ? I make it to be at least 25, a real epidemic.
Some sports coach claimed it was because:
"the reasons include that players don't fully recover from the previous season, poor scheduling at the start of the new season and some starting their pre-season training too early".
but presumably it could just be because everyone is being ultra cautious and retiring with injuries that they wouldn't normally retire with.
