RE: British Tour 2014

Hmm, very interesting, The Optimist.

The BT Notts event being on hard courts makes the winner's entry into the Q WC play-offs significantly less understandable.

Though in form, particularly from an apparently strong field, still holds.

It will still after all just really be playing in a tournament to get into a tournament to qualify to get into qualifying to get into another tournament ( if quite a big one :) ).

Yes, I think Beth and Richard have got the leaderboard slots.  The BT at Notts  is on hard courts and runs alongside the 75K on grass and is always ridiculously strong, partly because a lot of women who don't come through the 75K qualifying move across to the BT and partly because the WC prize is attractive.  As I mentioned on another thread, Notts really try to make something of this bunch of tournaments calling it a festival of tennis and having lots going on.  This prize is probably linked to that to ensure that visitors (and there are plenty) have lots to see, including the better Brits.

Interesting, tx.

If Beth, say, enters and wins, does the slot go to the runner-up?

I rather like these play-offs - sudden death and all that. Sharpens up the whole picture. Good luck to them all. And, yes, well done to Notts for making a festival of it - hope they get good weather smile

Yes, if the winner does not require the wildcard, it is offered to the runner up.  If he/she does not want it, the LTA can offer it to whoever the head of men's / women's tennis decides.

If the person at the top of the leaderboard does not want their wildcard, it is offered to the player in second place and so on down to 5th place, after which the LTA can offer it to anyone as above.

Great to see that Lloyd Glasspool had obviously come back from the States for teh summer and is signed up for the BT event this week.

Will be interesting to see how college life has suited him and his tennis - I think he's one of our best college hopefuls at the moment (and still a freshman? Or just finished, I assume).

Sebastian Rey is another freshman who's also back for the hols and in the BT main draw.

Our college boy, Lloyd Glasspool, has made the final, beating Richard Gabb in two sets.

He plays young Peter Ashley in the final.

So, The Optimist, if I've understood this right, the winner of this match will get an automatic place into the Wimbly qualy play-offs ?

Yes, that's right and if the winner doesn't want it, then it is offered to the runner up.  However, should Lloyd get the place and go on to win a QWC into Wimby, he wouldn't be able to take his winnings cheque (well only up the value of his expenses anyway!!)

Do you mean if Lloyd wins the BT, and then wins a QWC into Wimbly, he won't be able to take his BT winning cheque ? Or his Wimbly winning cheque? Presumably he must be able to take his Wimbly winning cheque ?!? Seems strange that he loses his BT winnings cheque too, to be honest.

I meant his Wimby cheque.  However, the rule is he can only accept prize money from a tournament as long as it doesn't exceed his expenses for that tournament (including travel, food, accommodation and entry fees).  Not sure what money  players get for a place in qualifying at SW19 but assumed it to be fairly generous.

I would definitely be looking for the best quality 5 star hotel in the area - and then praying I didn't lose.

Just a sec - if Lloyd wins the BT, and then wins a QWC place, and then goes on to qualify for the MD, and then wins Wimbledon (OK, so I may be going a bit far but you get the idea): if all that happens, you'[re saying that Lloyd doesn't get his zillions, just two weeks of hotel bills?

So who does get the zillions ? BT Nottingham ?

Well, clearly he could take it, but then he wouldn't be an amateur and would not qualify for US college tennis and would lose his scholarship.  Obviously if he won Wimby he might not care!!  There was a case a year or two ago where a US girl on a WC won a round or two at the US Open and declined her winnings.  Can't remember her name but there was quite a bit about it in the US press.  It followed a lot of coverage concerning student US football, basketball and  baseball players whose activities earn a lot of money for their unis and who are not allowed to benefit individually (apart from getting a free education).

Oh, The Optimist, I was being TRULY dense - I thought you meant that anybody who won the BT event couldn't claim Wimbly winnings - that it was a quid pro quo for getting the quali play-off place.

Right, I'm with you now (yeah, tail-end Charlie, bringing up the rear, I know).

ANd, yes, I understand the amateur status requirement of US college (that's where Evan Hoyt fell foul with that silly 6-week tiddly sponsorship thingy and had his place taken away).

OK, so either win enough dosh to quit college or just a small amount that you don't regret waving goodbye to - nothing too serious though :) Thanks for your patience !
