Very tough to rate Evo's performance, as sets 1 and 3 were below par, whereas set 2 was way above par. Did Gulbis go on walkabout in the 2nd set or did Evo have a stonker during that time.
Still don't think Evo has rediscovered his summer US form, but at the same time it is still a very encouraging start to the season.
Evo has tweeted that it wasn't a good day today and that he "wasn't good enough". Quite surprised by this tweet but at the same time encouraged to see that he's setting himself higher standards. I'm sure a year ago he'd have been more than happy to have pushed someone like Gulbis to 3 sets.
Playing the $50k challenger in Hawaii would certainly seem sensible. Its half way betrween Aus and California where he service will be needed for the DC. Of course, if he he makes it to week 2 of the AO, he'll have to pull out of Maui. After the DC, I imagine he might be ready for some home cooking, it'll have been 5 weeks on the road. Then what? Europe or the US, Challengers or ATP qualies? Anyway, at least he's made a profit on his first week. I wish I could make $10k for a week's work!
Yeah, but by the time he's flown himself and team round the world, eaten out, stayed in hotels etc, he'll be lucky to be in profit, let alone what he's got to fork out every week he doesn't win much.
Obviously the final set was disappointing but things like that will happen from time to time as Dan steps up to ATP level and it is encouraging that he managed to win the second set after having squandered a double break lead.
As for scheduling, I would expect a mix of challengers and ATP qualifiers. I would hope that he tries qualifying in Indian Wells and Miami as he seems to enjoy the big time and being at the same tournament as Andy is something which I can only see as a positive for him.

Tough life unless you get to the top.
Absolutely. That 10k is not for one week's work but also for the four or five previous weeks where he wasn't earning anything. In fact, according to the ATP site, Dan (pre-LTA bonus top ups) has earned about USD 140 this year i.e. about GBP 85k i.e. about 1,500 a week, which is not too shabby but (as Helen says) hardly riches when you take off all the expenses.
And when you look at someone like Dan Cox - WR 250, with ATP money earned for the year of GBP 12.5k - you could cry. (Although Dave Rice is a good counter example - WR 321 with income of over 24k - probably not profitable but at least showing the canny financial acumen to (a) play some doubles, and (b) win your first round in the Wimbly qualies).
