Week 1 - ATP 250 - Doha, Qatar (hard)

Andy should be in the main draw here.

QR1: Dan Evans WR 150 v Michael Shabaz (USA) WR 394 (= CH)

Top Q seed Gabashvili or Hernych will await the winner.

Fairly nice opening match for Dan but Gabashvili would be a tough match in round 2.

Decent 1st round draw, a shame no points available for 1 win. Good luck Dan!

Going to very interesting to see how Mr Evans does this year.

I was disappointed that Evo pulled out of the Asian challenger swing towards the end of last year.

Just now hope that he has had a very productive close season and is very ready physically and mentally to build on last season.

It was disappointing but I suppose it depends on whether you take his given reasons for doing so at face value.

If he was indeed a bit tired after his exploits and hard work then it probably was the sensible thing to come home, take a break and then get himself properly prepared for the new season. I don't think it would have been in his best interests to have picked up a few more wins in Asia, come home in mid November knackered and then have to chose between getting some proper rest or putting in some serious off season work.

Of course with Dan's past there is always the nagging doubt that he just wanted to be back home with his mates and/or girlfriend for a couple of weeks rather than enduring the grind of the tour. I guess that only he really knows and after the excitement of last summer he probably deserves the benefit of the doubt. In any event if he starts this year well it will look like a good decision.

Yes, I tried to choose my words carefully ( knowing the reason given, but I admit still with a nagging doubt ) i.e. I was disappointed, but yes it may indeed have been the right thing to do, and so not disappointing. I just had been looking forward to seeing how Evo would get on in these challengers.

Whatever, hoping he can have a really good 2014.

Evo finishes the job 6-0 6-4. Apart from the blip of getting broken smooth sailing so far. smile

Edit: Hah beaten by two seconds. Gabashvili lost the first set of his match.

According to Stu Fraser:

R1: Andy Murray WR 4 v Mousa Zayed (QAT) WR 2099.

Tough opener that.
