RE: Week 50 - ITF ($10K) - Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt Hard

The Korean girl took a nasty fall, slipped and fell on her back. Hope she's OK.

But the GB girls are 2-0 up, despite Katy doing some ineffective drop shots and missing her smashes. The Koreans certainly have a little gamesmanship at times, as well as exactly the style that Katy was complaining about last week.

Disappointing defeat.

Not sure i'd be happy with Harriet, playing at the back of the court most of the time.

FINAL: (7) Katy Dunne WR 626 beat (2) Klaartje Liebens (BEL) WR 499 (= CH) by 3 & 0

I hoped Katy would win but I didn't expect it to be that emphatic - brilliant

This win should lift her into the 520s, I think (with 61 points) - which will complete a stunning rise of more than 400 places in less than 3 months! In the last 3 weeks, she has won 13/14 singles matches and 9/10 doubles matches - that's a good habit to get into

And even better, she is STILL angry with herself for losing her SF last week from having 2 MPs for the victory. That tells us she expects to win, is desperate to win, and is bitter about not winning when in a position to do so. I like that.

A very strong end to the year for Katy. Excellent. I'm not sure we have any outstanding propsects among our junior or young senior girls, but a few of them appear to have enough about them to be top 150-250 at the very least at some point (Dunne, Boulter, Christie, perhaps even Dean one day if she recovers, and a few of the 98/99 girls seem to be a cut above too)..............not a watershed moment for GB women's tennis for sure, but not to be sniffed at either.

Wouldn't surprise me if Katy went top 250 by the end of 2014, assuming she is injury free. Would be great for someone else to emerge from the pack and give her some company.

Katy's 61pts will put her in the 531 to 538 range and just 9pts away from breaking into top 500

I'm wondering how you get to 531-538 if we agree that she now has 61 points - I'm basing my "520s" simply on the current rankings http://www.wtatennis.com/SEWTATour-Archive/Rankings_Stats/Singles_Numeric.pdf where WR 523-527 have 61 points, with "should" and "520s" designed to allow a margin for slippage - have you done (or seen) a more accurate calculation based on the points other players in that range will actually have on 23 Dec?

I realise it's far from impossible that the number of points needed for a given place may rise over the next two Mondays (I haven't checked, but I get the impression there are still more tournaments being played than at this time last year) and you may well turn out to be right, especially with some players getting the odd point from the 50K in Ankara next week, I'm just intrigued as to why you seem to be so sure she'll be ranked in the 530s rather than the 520s.

Thanks, it helps to know what we're comparing I find those rankings are often a few places out when you get that far down the list, in that he doesn't always get the on/off timing of the 10K/25K points exactly right (hardly surprising when he has so many players to keep track of and that doesn't prevent it from being a wonderful resource!) but having said that, from what I remember, he more often places players slightly higher than they should be rather than lower, so it'll be interesting to see how it turns out on Monday week.

Had to smile - Tweetdeck flags that a tweet I made 10 weeks ago (during this tournament, as it turns out) has been favourited by Valeriya Solopaeva. Turns out it was only second tweet ever (using the non-Cyrillic version of her name, at least) about her tennis-playing career after the one I wrote saying that Harriet had drawn her in R1 in the first place.

What did the tweet she favourited say?

"Sharm el Sheikh 10K R1: GB are now 2/2 in Egypt so far today as @harriet_dart beats 16-year-old Russian qualifier Valeriya Solopaeva 0&4 "

Aww!

I guess when you're playing at that level for a country with 5 players in the WTA top 25 getting all the attention, it's nice to be noticed even if you lose, even by someone who's more interested in your opponent
