RE: Week 50 - ITF ($10K) - Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt Hard

After a string of breaks at the end of the 2nd set, it went to a tiebreak which Katy managed to edge

L16: (7) Katy Dunne WR 626 beat (Q) Jaimy-Gayle van der Wal (NED) UNR by 6-4 7-6(5)
L16: Harriet Dart WR 1231 beat (4) Elena-Teodora Cadar (ROU) WR 541 (=CH) by 2 & 0

QF: (7) Katy Dunne WR 626 v (Q) Nina Stojanovic (SRB) UNR (junior WR 17)
QF: Harriet Dart WR 1231 v Liudmila Vasilyeva (RUS) WR 747 (= CH)

World junior no. 17 Stojanovic is playing only her 2nd senior ITF this year but she upset the top seed today. Harriet and her next opponent both upset top 5 seeds too.

TB back from 1-5 to *6-5... and takes it.

no idea quite how katy managed to win that second set she was up against the wall all the way through

nothing in the dutch girls junior or senior records sugested she was gonna be so tough

well done again, winning even when seemingly playing not so great is always important

more points in the bank

That's a brilliant scoreline from Harriet, and well done for Katy in battling through while feeling "very odd".

Katy though has raised a white flag re any remaining prospects this year of getting to that coveted GB no 11 spot !

Didn't see that result from Harriet. Both girls have good chances of making the semis.

Harriet set to go back into the GB top 25 shortly.

Really impressive - 6 wins across 3 continents and all in straight sets too!

Unless I've made a blooper (quite likely but here goes):

two weeks ago (week 48), the GB women as a whole had 5 points coming off - and won 27 new points

one week ago (week 49), the women had zero points coming off - and won 9 new points

this week (week 50), the women have 1 point coming off - and have already won 56 new points !!!

with a good chance of a few more to come tomorrow.

This is a mega net addition . . . onwards and upwards . . .

Judging by the stream (sadly not the court Katy and Harriet is/ will be playing on) it's a very windy day in Sharm El Sheikh.

Yes, absolutely !

By the way, if you're watching the other stream for a little bit, the French girl, Tessah, has only just turned 15 and is a real prospect, not one of the absolute top ones till now but a more powerful girl than the others - I've known her since she was tiny and I think she's got a lot going for her.

I was going to ask if you knew anything about her, as she's currently giving her Russian opponent all sorts of problems.

Yes, good on her. She lost in the semis of the French national championships this year (was ranked to lose in the quarters, I think) and there are a handful of girls her age who are definitely better than her at the moment but she's got a physique that some of the others haven't and is a really nice girl (although a bit feisty on court sometimes, but that's no bad thing . ..  )

Meanwhile, Katy's won the first set 6-4 so, if both could hold on and see it out, we'd get to see them both play each other tomorrow morning smile But, as you say, very windy - a lot of breaks . . .
