Nelson Mandela and Tennis

Not many obituaries to the great man have mentioned his links with tennis. Here is an affectionate tribute: http://eveningharold.com/2013/12/05/mandela-crashes-out-after-heroic-five-set-marathon-struggle/ smile

Your username reminds me of the (almost surely apocryphal) anecdote about the first thing Mandela said after being released.

It would have been terrible if his first question had been "How's skippy the bush kangaroo?". Would have known for certain that he had mislaid his marbles whilst inside!

Nice. Cheered me up after some rather fraught discussions I have been involved in on Digital Spy regarding how we will / should remember Nelson Mandela. Why do I go near that forum ?!

Nelson Mandela's prisoner number was almost a tennis score 64 66 4

On a wider sporting context his wearing of a springbok shirt for the 1995 Rugby World Cup final was pure political genius, and made one of iconic photographs of the 20th century as he presented the cup to Francois Pienaar
