Typical daydreaming from myself, but could a European Champions League work in tennis? For example A1 Pharmaceuticals representing Britain against the champions of France, Germany, Holland etc? Does anyone know if most European countries have a national club championships?

can't see why it wouldnt work. i think there is already a university competition with this idea that is played over 2-3 weeks at the end of the summer which i have seen describred as the "champions league of university tennis". I think it is the winners of the BUCS trophy that represent the UK in this case, which has been Stirling the last few years for the men

Oh yeah here is more info on that http://www.ectatennis.com/ecta.html

It looks like the website has not been updated for 4 years, but Euan McGinn at Stirling Uni seems to organise it and I remember reading about the uni world championships on this forum too. That happens once a year, with team and individual events.

I guess the main barrier would be finding a big enough sponsor, because to tempt the top french and german club players, who are world ranked, the clubs would need to pay them a lot of money and therefore need a lot of prize money to be on offer.

I think this French article is talking about their national finals, if you look at the names, quite a few top 100 players, our British boys, Marcus Willis and Neil Pauffley for our national champs would be struggling:

05/12/15 - 19:23

And a team with these players seems to be the top one in Germany!

1 LK1 18304168 Kohlschreiber, Philipp (1983) GER 2:0 2:0 4:0
2 LK1 18850315 Ramos-Vinolas, Albert (1988) ESP 2:0 1:1 3:1
3 LK1 19051883 Berankis, Ricardas (1990) LTU 0:1 1:0 1:1
4 LK1 18703157 Haider-Maurer, Andreas (1987) AUT - - -
5 LK1 19251881 Fucsovics, Marton (1992) HUN - - -
6 LK1 18750881 Nedovyesov, Aleksandr (1987) KAZ 2:1 3:0 5:1
7 LK1 18502010 Gimeno-Traver, Daniel (1985) ESP 1:0 1:0 2:0

Cricket had a similar issue with T20 international club cricket, where you had a scheduling issue as different countries played at different times of the year and also a cross over of players playing for champions in multiple countries i.e an overseas pro could be eligible for 3 or 4 teams.

Oh, I don't know.  I think Marcus would rather fancy his chances against Berankis in the German finals. wink

Not league, but in the money tournaments in France, Emily Appleton has been playing a big Toulon competition in July.

And won the title

with a comfortable 6-4 6-4 win against Margot Sturchler, born 1997

Add: And Stuart Parker (age 18), who is from Jersey and plays in club tennis with Scott Clayton and is now ranked -2/6 (equates to British Tour semis, say, or ITF round one, or some rough thing along those lines) has been going through tournaments like a hot knife through butter). He'll definitely go up to -4/6 at the end of the season. Would be curious to know what his plans are - studies, with serious tennis, I would guess (if the French model is anything to go by). But don't know...

Congrats to A1 and so pleased to see that Jonny is playing which hopefully means his recent injury setback is not too serious.
