RE: Week 48 - ITF ($10K) - Rethymno, Greece Hard

Very interesting to hear of another couple doing what Gary Lewis is doing.  Do we have a list of the 20 players they support?   We probably ought to be supporting Coric on the grounds that if he becomes hugely successful some of his earnings will go back into the pot to support young British players.

Yes, I think it's interesting too. Poses a whole heap of questions . ..

On their site this is their list of current players:

Didn't realise Beth was part of that group.

Harriet will give the top seed a match, but I cannot see her winning that game. Beth won't progress any further. Katy should pick up the most points this week.

Katy and Beth have won their doubles QF by w/o.

So straight into the semis . . .

Katy wins the first set 6-2.

Beth now 4*-3. I don;t think that her 16 year-old opponent had ever won an adult ITF match until this first round, when she won by retirement - so come on Beth ! 4 points would be lovely ! (although of course, Beth's results sheet is not that much different . . . )

With 8 DFs, but 6/6 BPs converted, Katy wins easily:

R2: DUNNE, Katy (GBR) 702 def. SIOPACHA, Maria (CYP) UNR (16 year old) 6-2 6-1

That'll take Katy into the 600s - about WR 685, I reckon. Nice forward momentum.

And Beth is 4-2* up in the second

Beth went *5-2 up in the 2nd, winning 4 games in a row from an early break down, but the Romanian then won the next 2 games and has a game point to level the 2nd set.

Beth stops the rot and the Romanian will have to serve to stay in the match again.

and, drat, the Romanian girl wins the tie-break.

Mind you, Beth seems to be a good three-set player (didn't she notch up a whole lots of three set wins at the nationals this summer ?) Time for one more. . . .

Well, let's hope she turns it round but looks like I was well wrong - Beth is 0-3 0-40 down !
