Week 48 - ITF ($10K) - Rethymno, Greece Hard

Q1: ASKEW, Sarah Beth (GBR) UNR v Bye

Strangely all players in the qualifying event get a bye into the main draw.

Katy Dunne and Harriet Dart should get through to the main draw without going through "qualifying".

Huge week for Harriet and Beth. Both need a win to get a WTA ranking. Beth in particular as her national ranking is not particularly high.

Katy is seeded 5.

Beth's match looks winnable, the Israeli doesn't seem to have any pedigree at senior or junior level.

Harriet will beat Lalaouni(who dropped a set tp Boccard and is not very good) but will meet the top seed in rd 2

Katy should at least make the QF and start moving through the 600 rankings.

Well done to Beth and Harriet - I guess that the JTC coaches are out there in Greece, with Katy too, so well done to JTC too.

NB interesting article about them (and Coric) a couple of months ago if didn't see it and is interested:

Having lost her ranking today, Harriet wastes as little time as possible getting it back

R2: DART, Harriet (GBR) UNR v LAZAREVA, Maragarita (RUS) 1 397 (CH 338 in Apr)

With 8 players through to R2 so far, only 4 games have been dropped by R1 losers - the top 4 seeds had R1 byes, the 7th seed won with a double bagel and plays a player whose R1 opponent withdrew, Harriet lost 1 game and the 8th player through lost 3!

Meanwhile, Beth is 2-0* up in the 1st set

Beth is in a really tight match. She broke early but got broken back and is now 4*-5 on serve.

She actually lost 4 games in a row from 3-1* up, then broke back herself at 3-5* when Krivoshapov served for the set. It is indeed very tight!

Well done Beth

Btw, assuming nobody else gets in first, by getting a singles ranking on Monday week, Beth will also be the *75th* British player (51 men, 24 women) to hit a new singles career high so far this year!
