Disappointing by Lewis at the end (?) of a disappointing year for him in singles.
( in 2012 he ended the year WR 712 with 27 points, and is now WR 770 with 24 points )
The doubles has generally gone very well, but I do wonder where he sees his ambitions in singles. As a still only 21 year old, it is difficult to imagine him not giving a lot of priority to still see where he can get to in singles, and for whatever reasons it has not gone well this year.
Further to my post regarding Lewis' singles, I was actually surprised to see that overall his points and ranking have actually dipped this year for doubles as well as singles.
2013 : Current ranking 358 with 173 points
( 7 futures titles, 3 futures RU )
2012 : End of year ranking 284 with 235 points ( CH was in August 2012, a ranking of 261 )
( 6 futures titles, 3 futures RU, with more 15Ks, and also 25 points for Wimbledon qualifying with George Morgan and 15 points for Bath challenger QF with Ed Corrie )
In 2012 Lewis scored doubles ranking points with 7 different partners, mainly though Ed Corrie and George Morgan.
Looking at Marcus, at now doubles WR 371, just above his recent CH of 370, he only recently took out his previous doubles CH of 378, dating back to the end of 2009 as a 19 yo.
Just very interesting that with all their titles etc this year, that this is not really new doubles ground, particularly for Lewis.
Hopefully, though, it is a partnership that can develop further and really flourish in the future.
L32: (1) Marcus Willis WR 356 beat Dominik Kellovsky (CZE) WR 1607 (CH 1569 in Apr) by 3 & 3 L32: Lewis Burton WR 770 lost to Jacob Adaktusson (SWE) WR 708 (CH 214 in 2006) by 1 & 4 L32: (4) Liam Broady WR 539 beat (WC) Konstantinos Mikos (GRE) WR 972 (= CH) by 6-0 3-6 6-2 L32: (5) Oli Golding WR 556 beat Evgeny Karlovskiy (RUS) WR 857 (= CH) by 1 & 0

Interesting analysis, Indy. And I agree with your point that it would be very strange for a fit, young player to decide to focus purely on doubles - I posted earlier that maybe he his singles was poor because he was focusing on doubles or maybe he was focusing on doubles because his singles was poor i.e. chicken/egg dilemma.
However, seems that the doubles is not so brilliant anyway.
Curious - Lewis has very good athletic skills and a pretty nice technique - strange that he seems to be struggling . . .
Meanwhile, Marcus has just won his first round match 6-3 6-3
Oh dear. What have I done. When I switched on 20 mins ago, Liam was 6-0 3-1 up and cruising. Since I started following livescores, he has lost 4 games in a row and is now serving to stay in the second set at *3-5.
I think I will disappear and come back in an hour or so.
For clarification re Lewis's doubles, I have made no particular judgement above re his season as to whether it has been OK, good, very good, "not so brilliant" etc etc. Others can speak for themselves.
What I have shown is that in futures it has been overall very similar in titles and runner ups to last year. One more title so far this year ( maybe shortly two ) but less points and lower ranking overall due to the additional 15Ks, challenger and Wimbledon qualifying ranking points last year.
So no judgement from me on this year as such, just really giving context in my surprise to discover that he had achieved what he had last year so that overall statswise this year has not been an improvement on last year, but in fact a slight reverse.
As to where Lewis and Marcus currently stand in the rankings :
Lewis is WR 358, GB rank 16, and Marcus is WR 371, GB rank 17. As I noted elsewhere, there are currently precisely 20 ( yes, Bob's famous singles mission ! ) British players ranked in the doubles top 500. This week should push their WRs up a bit.
