No worries, Jag, I wasn't talking about Katy either but Elise (just as an example). I do see your point but I don't really agree - however, that's all well and good and what this forum is all about !!! :)

I see the point Jaggy is trying to make but you don't actually avoid better players by playing in places like this, you just meet them later. In many ways, it must be better to get some wins (and points) by beating other players (even if some of them aren't that good) and then to come up against the better players a bit later (in the QFs, say) than to always meet the better players in R1 and lose in R1 most of the time.

Players who go down the Sharm route may well end up a bit over-ranked and thus suffer a few losses to lower-ranked opponents in the stronger tournaments, but they are probably still better off overall.

I think Laura probably is becoming relatively "overranked". She has to my mind quite largely achieved this by good selection of tournaments. The point has been made before about many of our girls seeming to miss some fairly accessible attractive tournaments.

But I honestly fail to really see much downside for Laura from this. She wins more matches, gets more ranking points and money and indeed match play and as Steven says will still end up playing better players, just later on in tournaments.

Yes, I agree with both points there.

And I'd also add again that, given there are so many tournaments out there, there must logically be a whole heap of other players who are in exactly the same position as Laura, i.e. similarly slightly over-ranked, and therefore maybe it's not overranked at all.

That's right. From memory I'd argue that, for both men and women, certain nations which are either geographically remote from the European tennis "heartland" or where perhaps the notion of playing there is alien or not hugely attractive to Europeans......can be of benefit to their local players in providing "easy" futures points with predominantly local players represented. Austalia, Japan, Brasil, Kazakhstan, etc.....that type of thing. So it's very possible that these nations have more than their share of "over-ranked" players. Having said that, Continental Europeans do benefit from having so many tournaments on their doorstep, so arguably it's to their advantage in other ways!

Despite the seeding, Laura started off as the major outsider on Bet365 (someone's been reading this site !!!!).

But she's now 4-3* ahead (on serve) and the odds are coming down . . .

*5-5 now - 4 breaks in a row in games 3-6, holds otherwise.

The 1st set goes to a tiebreak, which Zovincova takes 7-2

Laura did well to get to the breaker to be honest. She was under immense pressure in every service game saving multiple break points.
